history
The place Rust was mentioned for the first time in 762 in the so-called Eddo Testament. The community belonged to the Lahr district for a long time and after its dissolution in 1973 it became part of the newly formed Ortenau district .
During the November pogrom of 1938 , the interior of the synagogue at Klarastraße 14 was desecrated by SA men , but the building itself was not destroyed. It was only demolished in 1964 after heated public debates. The plaque attached to the Raiffeisenbank warehouse reports untruthfully that the place of worship was destroyed “by the effects of the war”.
The first stage of the 2001 Tour de Suisse to Basel started in Rust .

Culture and sights
Buildings
Balthasar Castle
In the center of Rust is the Balthasar Castle , built in 1442 , which was formerly inhabited by the Böcklin von Böcklinsau family. It can be viewed in Europa-Park . Today one of the amusement park's restaurants is located in the castle.
Balzare castle
This building is also associated with the Böcklin von Böcklinsau family. The mansion dates from the early Renaissance and was believed to have been built in 1598. Since the building is still inhabited today, it can only be viewed from the outside. The beautiful ornamentation in the framework is in contrast to the relatively simple construction. The castle is located on Ritterstrasse, not far from the church.
church
The Catholic parish church Petri in Ketten (St. Peter in the chains) is the only parish church in Rust. It is one of the few churches in the area dedicated to the fisherman's patron Peter . The rectory is in the immediate vicinity.
The nave was built and inaugurated in 1728. The tower and choir were built in 1731 according to plans by the builder Peter Thumb and consecrated in 1737. In 1888 the nave was extended and the sacristy was added. The church was then expanded to include the two side aisles from 1906 to 1907 . During renovations from 1952 to 1954, the church was "turned around". That is, the altar was moved from the eastern side to the western side of the nave. In the 1990s there was a fire in the sacristy. The ceiling paintings in particular were affected by the smoke from the fire. The pictures have been restored today, but still very dark due to the smoke.
synagogue
There used to be a synagogue in Rust . It was built by the Israelite community of Rust after 1852 and inaugurated in 1857. During the Reichspogromnacht in 1938, the synagogue was desecrated, devastated and damaged. In 1964, the church was demolished with the consent of the Israelite Council in Karlsruhe.
Since 1999 there has been a memorial at the former location of the synagogue (Ritterstraße). As a component, it contains the three former archways of the portals. They bear the inscription: “Watch your foot when you go into the house of God. He can be heard up close. "
Old Town Hall
The "Old Town Hall" is the former town hall of the municipality. It was originally built between 1844 and 1845 and a bell and clock tower was added in 1892. In 1989 the building was demolished and rebuilt. This makes the old town hall younger than the current new town hall. Today there is a bank on the ground floor and a room used as a citizens' hall on the upper floor.
Regular events
The Rust Street Festival takes place on the first weekend in September. The Euro Dance Festival takes place in the Europa-Park Rust in February or March . Since 1995, every Sunday during the summer months the live show every Sunday produced at Europa-Park and in the first broadcast.

The community of Rust is home to Europa-Park . With currently 5.6 million visitors per year and more than 100 attractions and shows, it is the largest amusement park in the German-speaking region and the largest seasonal amusement park in the world. Europa-Park directly employs around 3600 people, indirectly up to 8500 jobs (mainly in the region) are secured. This makes the park one of the largest employers in the region.
