The SV Babelsberg 03 (official name: . Sports club Babelsberg 03 eV ), short- Zero Three , is a sports club from the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam , which on 10 December 1991 by spinning off the football section of the former company sports club SV Motor Babelsberg was founded.

The roots of the club, based in the Babelsberg district of Potsdam, go back to the Sport-Club Jugendkraft 1903 , which was founded on October 1st, 1903 . His greatest successes to date: membership of the top German division in the pre-war period, the Gauliga, the second highest division of the GDR , the GDR League , and after reunification, promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2001 .

The association, with the colors blue and white, has over 1,200 members (as of February 2018). Since the 2013/14 season, the club has been playing in the Northeast Regionalliga with its best-known and active division with the largest number of members, the football division and its first men's team . The club plays its home games in the city's largest football stadium, the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion . With basketball , roller derby and volleyball , the club maintains other departments in competitive and popular sports.

history

Beginnings until 1945

On October 1, 1903 founded seven young men from Nowawes , with an interest in weight lifting , weight training and wrestling , the sport club youthful vigor 1903 . Independently of this, two years later, workers from Nowawes with an interest in football founded the Fortuna 05 football club and took part in organized games. On February 15, 1919, both clubs merged to form SV Nowawes 03 . From the summer of 1919, the new club played in the Berlin-Brandenburg district league, the second highest regional league.

In the 1928/29 season, the future German national coach Sepp Herberger briefly trained SV Nowawes 03. After relegation in 1931 to the district league, the march into the top German division, the Gauliga Berlin-Brandenburg, followed between 1933 and 1935 . As a newcomer, Nowawes took 8th place among ten teams in the 1935/36 season . The sporting highlight was the Gaufest victory in 1937, in which they defeated FV Cottbus 7-1 in the final.

In 1938 the city of Nowawes and the villa colony of Neubabelsberg were combined to form the city of Babelsberg. The club was renamed SV Babelsberg 03 . Only 17 months later, Babelsberg had already lost its town charter and had been incorporated into Potsdam, the zero three merged with the Sportfreunde Potsdam to form the Potsdam 03 sports association . After relegation from the Gauliga in 1938 , the club managed to rise again in 1943 and took third and fourth place in the following seasons .

BSG Motor Babelsberg

In 1946 the sports association, like all civil associations, had to be dissolved. In 1949 the first company sports associations (BSG) were founded in the GDR , which were supported by so-called sponsoring companies . The BSG Karl Marx Babelsberg was founded in Babelsberg among others . The local VEB Karl Marx Babelsberg acted as the sponsoring company . In 1950, it was placed under the central Motor Sports Association , to which all BSGs in the mechanical and vehicle industry belonged in the future. Then it was renamed BSG Motor Babelsberg . Their soccer team initially played lower class in the 1950s.

In 1961, SC Potsdam was founded, which, in addition to newly founded sports clubs in Neubrandenburg and Frankfurt (Oder) , was intended to further improve the performance of GDR sports. As an essential pillar of the SC, the soccer teams of the previous BSG Rotation Babelsberg were taken over as the soccer section. However, since the development of the first men's team stagnated in the second-rate GDR league , the football section was dissolved again in January 1966 and incorporated into BSG Motor Babelsberg, which was able to take its place in the GDR league. With the exception of defender Konrad and center forward Harald Betke (to Union Berlin ), the team continued to play unchanged for the second half of the season and ended up in 11th place .

Motor played for two and a half years in the GDR league, but then rose in 1968 with only four wins as bottom of the table in the Potsdam district league . In the 1970s Motor Babelsberg shuttled between the district league and the GDR league. After a renewed rise in 1981 followed nine years of league football, in which the BSG achieved partly good placements thanks to their unerring strikers Axel Brademann and Jörg Nachtigall (1982 and 1984 both second). In 1984 Motor Babelsberg reached the round of 16 of the GDR Cup ( FDGB-Pokal ), but was defeated there by the upper division Wismut Aue 4-2. As a table penultimate, the team had to relegate to the district league again in 1989 .

In the Eternal Table of the GDR League , Babelsberg is 23rd out of 199 teams.

SV Babelsberg 03, since 1991

On December 10, 1991, the football department was separated from SV Motor Babelsberg and re-established as SV Babelsberg 03. In 1993 the team became champions of the Brandenburg State League and rose to the Association League. After two runners-up in the association league, Babelsberg won the Brandenburg football championship in the 1995/96 season and was promoted to the top division. The first league season ended the team again as first in the table and rose further in the Regionalliga Nordost . In 1999, the zero-three won the Brandenburg State Cup against Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt and were allowed to participate in the DFB Cup the following season . In the second round of the cup , after a bye in the first round, they even managed a 1-0 victory over SpVgg Unterhaching . Under the new coach and former player Hermann Andreev , Babelsberg qualified in the 1999/2000 season for the newly introduced two-track regional league and again won the state cup.

Acted as an alleged relegation, in 2000/01 surprisingly even made it to the 2nd Bundesliga . After a good start into the second division season, the slump follows, so that the zero three at the end of the 2001/02 season had to relegate as bottom of the table. Because of the accumulated debts, the club filed for bankruptcy in April 2003 and was therefore determined to be relegated from the regional league.

Brandenburg State Cup Final 2009: Preparation for a Babelsberg Corner

From the 2003/04 season, SV Babelsberg 03 played in the Oberliga Nordost (North Season) . However, due to two runner-up championships behind the second team from Hertha BSC and MSV Neuruppin , the relegation games for the regional league promotion were missed. Even in the third year the ascent did not succeed. After a catastrophic second half of the season (in the second half of the table the SVB 03 occupied a relegation place) the team only finished third behind 1. FC Union Berlin and MSV Neuruppin. Instead, they won the regional cup with a 2-1 (1-0) win in the final against MSV Neuruppin. With this, SV Babelsberg 03 qualified for the first round of the 2006/07 DFB Cup . The first game against Hansa Rostock they won 2: 1, but lost to VfB Stuttgart 2: 4 in the second round . On May 20, 2007 Babelsberg made it to the regional league after four years with a 4-0 win at BFC Preussen . In addition, the team won the Association Cup on June 1, 2007 with a 3-2 win against Ludwigsfelder FC and qualified for the DFB Cup again . There they failed in the first round at MSV Duisburg with 0: 4. After the promotion to the Regionalliga Nord in 2007 , the goal was tenth place and the associated qualification for the new 3rd division . At the beginning, the team was able to earn a promotion place for League Three through a convincing fighting performance. But after six games with only three points, the club dismissed the coaching team Rastislav Hodul and René Tretschok on October 2nd . Dietmar Demuth (formerly FC St. Pauli and Eintracht Braunschweig ) was introduced as coach on October 7th . Jens Härtel , who was also a player for Babelsberg , was hired as assistant coach . But even with a new coaching team, the qualification for the 3rd division was missed, so that the team had to play in the fourth-class regional league for the 2008/09 season . The season goal, a place in the upper third of the table, was achieved with third place. The team was even able to assert itself in the promotion battle for a long time, but Holstein Kiel won it on the last matchday . For the 2009/10 season , promotion to the third division was formulated as a goal. After winning the autumn championship, they were able to hold the first place in the table until the end and were established two game days before the end as champions of the Regionalliga Nord and thus also as promoters in the single-track 3rd division . The top scorer was Daniel Frahn with 29 goals in 32 games. In addition, the club's reserve team won the Brandenburg State Cup 2010 and thus the right to start the 2011 DFB Cup with a win against the top division club Brandenburger SC Süd 05 . There, however, the first team competes, as the right to start applies to the entire club.

In its first season of the third division introduced in 2008, SV Babelsberg 03 fought for a long time against relegation in 2010/11 . After a good start they were in 14th place with 21 points from 19 games after the first half of the season. When Babelsberg lost 4-0 to Unterhaching in front of their home crowd in the Karl Liebknecht Stadium on March 19, 2011 , the team slipped to a relegation zone. But with the following 2-1 away win against the second team of FC Bayern Munich in the Sechzger Stadium , the team around gatekeeper and captain Marian Unger started a grandiose final spurt. From the last ten encounters, the team supervised by coach Dietmar Demuth scored 19 points and ultimately secured the class with ease. After 38 game days (12/10/16) there were 46 points and 13th place in the third division tableau. In addition, the Brandenburg State Cup was won again. In the final, the regional division VfB Hohenleipisch was defeated 3-0.

Although Babelsberg 03 had kept the class in terms of sport, participation in the third division in 2011/12 was in question for economic reasons. The chairman of the board, Rainer Speer, informed the DFB eight days before the deadline for the final proof of license that Babelsberg 03 could not provide the necessary documents for economic performance. Only with great effort, including extensive fan donations, a guarantee from the state capital Potsdam and financing commitments from a credit institute, could the licensing conditions be met in the end. The license documents were only submitted to the German Football Association 13 minutes before the deadline .

The difficulties with licensing had a serious impact on the composition of the squad for the new season. Against this background, the Babelsberg team was fighting relegation throughout the 2011/12 season . Only on the penultimate matchday did the team collect the last points to keep them up with a 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld . With 44 points Nulldrei occupied the last non-relegation place. In the Brandenburg state cup competition , however, the SVB lost the final against the association league club SV Falkensee-Finkenkrug 1: 2.

Although Babelsberg 03 had held the third division under difficult conditions, Dietmar Demuth was replaced by Christian Benbennek at the beginning of May 2012 after controversies on the club's board - among other things, board members Roland Schröder and Uwe Schilde resigned immediately . Also as a result of Demuth's leave of absence and previous, serious disputes about the future development of the club, Supervisory Board member Ralf Schöfski, CEO Thomas Bastian, treasurer Hendrik Woithe and fan representative Jens Lüscher resigned from their offices for personal reasons. This was preceded by a stronger financial commitment by the DKB .

Under Christian Benbennek, the team could not break away from the table cellar of the 3rd division during the 2012/13 season . In April 2013, Benbennek was released from his duties by the association. Almedin Civa , a former player and then active junior manager of the club, took over the sporting responsibility as coach . At the end of the 2012/13 season, they were relegated to fourth class. For the 2013/14 season , Cem Efe was appointed the new head coach. After rebuilding the team, he secured relegation in his first term as coach and stabilized the team in the regional league in the following seasons. He had also won the Brandenburg State Cup with the team , they beat the regional league team FSV 63 Luckenwalde 3-1 in the final . In the 2016/17 season he even surprisingly reached 5th place with the Babelsberg team. Due to different demands on him and the club management, the coach left the Potsdam club after four years; he started working as a sports coordinator at AOK Nordost . For the 2017/18 season , the sporting director Almedin Civa also took over the post of head coach. Civa left the club at the end of the 2018/19 season . He was followed by Marco Vorbeck , who was fired at the end of 2019 after the team landed on the penultimate place during the winter break. Predrag Uzelac then took over as coach .

Brandenburg State Cup

SV Babelsberg 03 is together with FC Energie Cottbus , the record winner of the Brandenburg State Cup . Both teams have won the competition nine times since 1991; Babelsberg lost six times in the final.

DFB Cup

The club has participated in the DFB Cup eleven times so far . While he was able to qualify for participation in the competition nine times by winning the finals of the Brandenburg State Cup, participation took place in 2001/02 via second place in the Regionalliga Nord 2000/01 and in the 2002/03 season automatically as the second division of the previous year.

Welcome United 03

In the summer of 2014, SV Babelsberg 03 founded the Welcome United 03 team, which consists exclusively of refugees . It was the first team in Germany in this form. The association had been running an integration team since 2009. All refugees were accepted into the association as members and also involved with all rights and obligations. The team consists of around 40 refugees from Serbia , Somalia , Syria , Macedonia , Nigeria and other countries. For the 2015/16 season, the team was registered as the third team via the Brandenburg Regional Football Association and has been playing in the Havelland district league since the beginning of the season. The team, whose players are now all eligible to play in the DFB, also include refugees who have already practiced this sport professionally or semi-professionally in their home countries. The team includes Abdihafid Ahmed from Somalia, who was active as a junior national player for his country of birth and competed in several junior tournaments up to U23. For its commitment to refugees, the association received the award as fan campaign of the season in July 2015 from the specialist magazine 11 Freunde and the German Football Association . Welcome United 03 has already been invited to friendly matches by the DFB and other major German football clubs. The team played against the national team of authors, organized by the DFB. They also played against a traditional Borussia Mönchengladbach team in May 2015 .

SV Babelsberg 03 plays its home games in the 10,787-seat Karl Liebknecht Stadium, which the club shares with the women's Bundesliga club 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam . In 2007, the city of Potsdam examined whether a new stadium in the Potsdam-Süd district (Waldstadt settlement) could be financed and enforced as part of the DFB application for the 2011 women's soccer World Cup . As a result, fans of SV Babelsberg 03 launched the “Pro Karli” campaign in order to preserve the traditional venue. A feasibility study finally advocated the preservation of the Karl Liebknecht Stadium; a new building would have cost the city of Potsdam around 20 million euros more. After the rejection of Potsdam's application to host the Women's World Cup, a completely new building was also ruled out by Mayor Jann Jakobs . In order not to endanger the world cultural heritage status of the adjacent Babelsberg Park , the stadium has articulated floodlight masts that can be extended for games.

Fan scene

With the beginning of the 1990s, the supporters of SV Babelsberg were characterized by the strong squatter scene in the city of Potsdam. In contrast to the general developments in German football, this enabled right-wing extremist tendencies to be stopped and pushed out of the stadium. The fan scene has been able to preserve the alternative character to date and is strongly committed to social standards such as anti-racism , anti- sexism and the football fans' initiative against homophobia .

In addition, the fans repeatedly organized actions related to their club, e.g. B. Pro Karli for the preservation of the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadium, the attempt to put the stadium name under monument protection or the observation of deployed police forces - also with the use of lawyers  - at soccer games of the own club, which found imitators nationwide.

In May 2011 after the successful relegation in the third division the insolvency of the club was revealed after secret guarantees from the municipal utilities of Potsdam leaked to the public. The wait-and-see attitude of the club officials at the time took advantage of the fan scene to take action to save the club itself, making headlines across Germany.

Curiosities

Local rival Fortuna Babelsberg sees itself as a "true successor to the successful top division team from Rotation Babelsberg". In 2003 the club anniversary of SV Babelsberg 03 was celebrated under the harmless motto “100 years of football in Babelsberg”, although this sport has only been organized since 1905.
