The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 14, 1965 and ended with the final on October 23, 1965 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As the defending champion, the Glasgow Rangers started the competition who had prevailed against Celtic in the Old Firm in the previous year's final . In this year's final, the Rangers and Celtic met again . The Rangers reached the final for the third year in a row, and for the ninth overall time since 1947 . For Celtic it was the second final in a row and the fourth overall since 1957 . Both clubs faced each other for the second time in the final after 1958 and 1965 . Celtic won the final 2-1. It was the third league cup triumph for Celtic since 1957. In the 1965/66 season , Celtic won the Scottish championship for the 21st time in the club's history . As a champion, Celtic took part in the European Champions Cup in the following season . The Rangers took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup. As Lisbon Lions , Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup in the final against Inter Milan . The Rangers lost in the final against Bayern Munich .
