The Schifferbörse is a building in Duisburg-Ruhrort on the Vinckekanal , which today serves as an office building and restaurant .

history

Before the construction of the Schifferbörse, inland shipping trades were carried out informally on the open road. However, in the mornings, whatever the weather, those involved clogged the road, and the uninformed boatmen were often taken advantage of by incorrect freight rates and excessive brokerage fees.

The “Schiffervereinigung Selbsthilfe” repeatedly called for sworn brokers to be employed or for a shipping office to be set up.

On February 19, 1895, the mayor of Ruhrort, Hermann Bemme, finally decided to build a covered parking space for the boatmen. Suggestions were drawn from Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp, but no suitable ideas were found. So a completely new type of boat exchange was to be created, for which the city made the property available.

In September 1899 the construction of the splendid Scandinavian-style building began according to plans by the chief construction director Karl Hinckeldeyn in Berlin, Bernhard Hertel was involved in the construction management . The inauguration took place on October 31, 1901. The building contained several “bunks” for a confidential negotiation atmosphere. The daily trading hour was set at 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and extended if necessary.

Entry cost 25 pfennigs for one day, annual tickets were available for 40 marks (for companies) or for 3 to 5 marks (for individual skippers).

For better comparison, coal - which accounted for 80% of the trade volume - was the standard commodity on which the freight was calculated.

After severe war damage in October 1944, the Schifferbörse was completely destroyed by a fire caused by children playing shortly after the end of the war.

Todays use

The first efforts to rebuild the building were made as early as 1947, and in 1952 the inauguration of the “first office building” was celebrated, which should have been followed by more. But the one building that was built by Duisburger Häfen AG remained. This was bought in 1980 by the city of Duisburg for the music school and sold again to a private consortium a short time later.

In order to use the building again for maritime purposes, it was completely renovated and partially rebuilt. Now the Schifferbörse is home to forwarding agents and shipping companies as well as the “Restaurant Schifferbörse” on the ground floor.

The Golden Book of the Schifferbörse, in which Kaiser Wilhelm II and Empress Auguste Viktoria have already entered, is on loan at the Museum of German Inland Navigation in Duisburg.
