When something appears in the sky on Maple Street and the power goes out, some residents believe it is a comet, but it would not explain the noise. Young Thommy has read many science fiction stories and is a firm believer in an alien invasion. When he says that there are mostly aliens disguised as humans, the adults dismiss this as nonsense. But little by little they ask themselves whether there isn't a kind of 5th column after all and who in the neighborhood might be suspicious. When Charly sees someone he doesn't know, he shoots him, but Pete was a neighbor he just didn't know. In some houses the lights go on again and the residents wonder whether these residents are suspicious, and young Thommy is also suspected because he knows so much about invasions. In the end, it is revealed that the aliens only tested what happens if you cut the power in any city. Since the inhabitants attack each other, they leave the earth to itself, as the people will destroy themselves and an invasion is not necessary.

Jameson then persuades his unsuspecting fiancée to run away with him. Unable to get proper sleep at home, he takes short naps on the train on his way home in the evening. One day, when the train seems to stop unexpectedly, he wakes up and finds his compartment deserted. The sun is shining outside and he discovers that the train stopped in a town called Willoughby in 1888. Passers-by explain to him that this is a “peaceful, quiet place where a person can come to rest while taking a walk and enjoy their life”. Williams wakes up in the real world and asks the conductor if he has ever heard of Willoughby, but Willoughby says no. That night he has another argument with his quarreling wife Jane. Selfish, cold and callous, she makes him understand that he is just a money machine for her. He tells her about his dream, but she mocks him and explains that it is a miserable and tragic mistake to have married a man whose big dream in life is to be Huckleberry Finn. Williams dozes off again the next week, and he's back in Willoughby. As he is about to get off the train starts again and he wakes up again. Williams decides to get out next time. After a nervous breakdown in the office, he calls his wife, but she leaves him in his time of need. On the way home he falls asleep again, and the train actually stops again in Willoughby. This time he takes the opportunity and gets out. The residents greet him warmly while he tells them that he is happy to be here. Suddenly the scene changes, the swinging pendulum of the station clock changes into the swinging lantern of the conductor, who stands over Williams' lifeless body. The conductor explains to another person that Williams shouted something about "Willoughby" and jumped to his death from the moving train. Williams' body is loaded into a hearse. At the end of the Civil War in the south, the worn-out soldiers from both sides were walking along a hot, dusty path. One of them has an injured leg and is laboriously moving on a crutch. When he passes a porch with a feverish woman waiting for her husband, he asks her for a drink of water and sleep under the tree. The next day a Yankee comes by and the woman hatefully fires a shot at him. This cannot harm the Yankee because he is already dead. The hobbling and the feverish also realize that they have to walk the dusty path of the dead.

The title is easy to decipher: Serving people . On the other hand, it takes a longer time to decrypt the contents of the book. In the meantime, people trust the aliens so much that vacation trips to their home planets are organized. Eventually the secret service realizes the terrible truth and tries to stop a tour group at the last moment; the book is a cookbook . In English, “ to serve man ” also means “ to serve people”.

Martin Senescu has worked in Mr. Ferguson's wax museum for many years . When this was given up due to falling visitor numbers and was to give way to a supermarket, Martin decided to take the figures from the murder exhibition - Jack the Ripper , Albert W. Hicks , Henri Désiré Landru as well as William Burke and William Hare - home with him. To the chagrin of his wife Emma, Martin stores the figures in the basement and spends huge sums on the air conditioning so that the wax dolls don't melt in the high temperatures. Soon the couple's reserves are completely exhausted. However, Martin shows no will to find a buyer for the figures and spends a lot of time lovingly caring for them. Emma's brother Dave recommends that she turn off the air conditioning to put an end to the haunted house. When she desperately wants to put this into practice, the character of Jack the Ripper begins to move and stabs her. Martin finds his wife's body the next morning and buries her. A little later, Dave breaks into the cellar in search of his sister. There he is killed by the Hicks figure with an ax. A few months later, Mr. Ferguson shows up at Martin's home and informs him that the Marchand's Wax Museum in Brussels is ready to take over the murderer figures. Mr. Ferguson goes to the basement to measure the figures and ends up dead at the feet of Henri Désiré Landru. Now the measure for Martin is full and he wants to destroy the wax figures. They then leave their pedestals and move towards Martin. They tell him that it was he who murdered his wife, Dave and Mr. Ferguson with the props from the dolls. Years later, a group of people visit the Marchand's Wax Museum's murder exhibition. The characters from Jack the Ripper, Hicks, Landru, Burke and Hare are complemented by a character from Martin, who is considered a serial killer.

Unknown dimensions (1985–1989)

The first broadcast took place again between 1985 and 1987 on the American broadcaster CBS and comprises a total of 65 episodes divided into 3 seasons. In Germany, all episodes of the series were broadcast with several interruptions from July 31, 1987 to April 8, 1992 on RTLplus .
During the first two seasons, an episode had a running time of around 40 to 45 minutes and usually consisted of 2 to 3 stories; from the third season the running time was reduced to around 22 minutes and only one story was told. In Germany, the running time has already been shortened from the second season, which is why episodes that originally contained two stories were divided into two episodes and episodes with three stories into one episode with two stories and one with only one story.

As a common type of punishment, the wrongdoer has a non-removable or concealable sign of Cain attached to his forehead, which declares him to be "invisible" for a while. Every citizen must ignore the convict. First of all, the rebellious Mitchel Chapman enjoys his punishment because he can do whatever he wants undisturbed. Gradually he is burdened by the lack of social contact and he begs in vain for attention. After having served the torturous sentence, he is considered particularly nice and courteous. When an “invisible woman” begs him, he is compassionate and cannot help but help her, which in turn leads to another punishment.

20th 20th Just one push of a button Button, button 7th Mar 1986 Nov 20, 1987 Peter Medak Richard Matheson
A couple receives a wooden box with a seemingly inoperative button on top. A stranger explains to the couple that if they push the button, "someone they don't know" will die and they will receive $ 200,000 for it. After much deliberation, the woman presses the button. The next morning the stranger hands them the money. When asked what is happening to the box, he replies that he would make the same offer to "someone you don't know".

The episode is based on a short story by Richard Matheson , but has a different ending point than this one. That's why Matheson used his pseudonym Logan Swanson for the script . The episode served as a template for the film The Box - You are the experiment . The film also starred Basil Hoffman, who gave the stranger Mr. Stewart in the Twilight Zone episode.
