history

The Weitra dominion originally belonged to Bohemia. In 1201 the Kuenringer Hadmar II founded the castle town of Weitra above the slightly older settlement Altweitra , which was probably named after a Slav named Vitorad (hence the current Czech name). The first granting of town charter also presumably fell under the Kuenringer rule. The core of the population were farming community .

Since the Kuenringer Ottokar II. Přemysl had supported, after his death (1278) Weitra was claimed by the Habsburgs ; since 1296 the city was finally in their possession. From May 26, 1321 ( Frederick the Fair ) is the oldest document obtained Weitras citizens with brewing - and Schank - privileges endowed.

In 1581 Rudolf II gave the castle and town of Weitra to Wolf Rumpf Freiherrn vom Wielroß ; after his death it fell to the Fürstenberg family through marriage in 1607 , who held the manor until 1848 and are still the owners of the castle and the associated large estates in the area.

Weitra was ravaged by fires in 1651 and 1672 .

The city has been known for its breweries since the 14th century , of which there were 22 in the heyday, today there are still two. Later, based on the weaving mill , the textile industry was added , as in the entire Waldviertel region .

Located in the border region, Weitra lost the part of its hinterland in southern Bohemia after the First World War . This was particularly noticeable through the Iron Curtain after the Second World War . The peripheral location and the fact that it had not been possible in the past to connect the city to the high-level transport network and to settle industry (even if the southern branch of the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railways from Gmünd to Groß-Gerungs was opened in 1903 ) had a disadvantageous effect on the economic situation.

In 1959 the Kuenringerkaserne was opened, so that Weitra became a garrison town .

religion

96.1% of the population are Roman Catholic , 1.3% Protestant . Other religious communities do not go beyond 0.5%. 1.8% are without religious beliefs .

Population development

The decrease in population since 1991 is based on a negative birth balance . The migration balance has been positive since then.
