history
From the ending "-bach" in the name it can be assumed that Urbach was founded in the period after the Great Migration , probably at the end of the 6th century.
The oldest documentary mention dates from the year 1204, when the General Chapter of the Premonstratensian Order regulated the responsibilities of the Rommersdorf and Sayn Abbeys in an arbitration award . Dierdorf and Urbach were assigned to Rommersdorf.
It is not known when the first church was built. The oldest part of today's church is the steeple. The design of the tower indicates that it was built towards the end of the 12th century. In the document from 1204, Urbach was named as a branch of the Dierdorf parish church (since the middle of the 16th century the Evangelical Church ). At the beginning of the 19th century, the nave and choir of the church fell into disrepair. According to a plan by the building inspector Ferdinand Nebel from Koblenz , today's octagonal nave was rebuilt between 1825 and 1830.
Urbach is first mentioned in a document as a high court in 1323. According to this document, the High Court "Hohe Veste Urbach" was established by the Counts of Wied . The court office was located "in the village under the linden tree intgen the churchyard". Since many people came together on the court days, a market also developed here.
In 1366 a Grebeneck castle is mentioned in Urbach . The information on this is sparse, more precise statements are not yet possible.
The Urbacher Märkerwald had a special meaning for the parish of Urbach. In 1716 there was a legal dispute over this forest with Count zu Wied, which was only settled in a settlement in 1793 under Prince Karl zu Wied . It lists the places belonging to the parish and the authorized users: Urbach-Kirchdorf (21 Märker ), Urbach-Überdorf (22), Dernbach (21), Linkenbach (17), Harschbach (16) and Niederhofen (8).
The first school in Urbach already existed around 1600. There were a total of 42 school-age children in the parish, 12 of them from Urbach (Kirchdorf), 9 from Überdorf, 5 from Linkenbach, 4 from Harschbach, 3 from Niederhofen and 9 from Dernbach and Steinebach. In what form and to what extent the lessons took place is not known. A schoolhouse was built around 1700 or shortly thereafter. The schoolhouse stood next to the church at the northern entrance to the churchyard. Since the second half of the 18th century, classes took place not only in the winter months, but also in the rest of the year. The school attendance itself was irregular, under threat of a punishment a "failure due to pigs" and the like was no longer allowed. In 1797 the following were given as subject matter: "Singing, prayer, reading and spelling, writing, arithmetic and natural phenomena".

The coat of arms has been legally valid since April 16, 1974. |
|
Justification of the coat of arms: The scales symbolize the Count of Wied High Court in Urbach, which has been recorded since 1323, for the "Upper County" and the market rights associated with the court. The forest hook is the symbol for the Märkerwald , joint property of the five communities in the parish of Urbach. |
