Urbar is a municipality in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate . The Rheinhöhenort belongs to the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein association. Land was a district of the city of Oberwesel from 1974 to 1999 . In 1999 Urbar became an independent municipality again.

Urbar is located between St. Goar and Oberwesel near the Rhine opposite the Loreley , with a direct view of the legendary Loreley rock.
history
Urbar was first mentioned in a document in 1246. In later documents it was called Vrbe (1311), villa Vrbere (1336), Vorbir (1338) and Urber (1385). The place name goes back to the mhd. "Urvar" (place on the bank, where you start and stop).
Until the end of the 18th century, Urbar belonged to the Oberwesel office of the Electorate of Trier . After 1792 French revolutionary troops occupied the region and annexed it after the Peace of Campo Formio (1797) . From 1798 to 1814 Urbar belonged to the French Rhine-Moselle department and was assigned to the canton of Sankt Goar and the arrondissement of Simmern . Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the region came under the Kingdom of Prussia . From 1816 the town was the Urbar Sankt Goar county in Koblenz assigned, that of 1822 to the Rhine province belonged.
After the First World War temporarily occupied by the French , the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946 . The independent municipality joined in a highly controversial step with an incorporation contract of 13/14. December 1973 with effect from March 17, 1974 to the city of Oberwesel. On September 13, 1999, Urbar became an independent municipality again.

The council in Urbar consists of twelve council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Local mayor is Heinz Link. In the local elections on May 26, 2019, he was elected with 82.58% of the vote and is the successor to Thomas Stein, who did not run again.

Attractions
With the Loreleyblick Maria Ruh lookout point , Urbar has one of the most beautiful panoramic views over the Middle Rhine Valley . To the west of the village, the observation tower on the Spitzenstein offers a comprehensive panoramic view of the entire area.
