La Baume is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
La Baume is located at 734 m , 14 kilometers southeast of the town of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The mountain village extends in central Chablais , on a protrusion high above the Dranse de Morzine , at the eastern foot of Mont Billiat in the northern Savoy Alps .
The area of the 16.91 km² municipal area includes a section of the Vallée d'Aulps. The Dranse de Morzine runs from south to north in a mostly about 200 m wide flat valley floor and is dammed below La Baume to the Lac de Jotty reservoir. To the west and south-west, the community area extends over a steep and densely wooded slope on the ridge between the valleys of the Dranse de Morzine and the Brevon. The border runs over the Rochers du Jotty , Mont Billiat (with 1894 m the highest point of La Baume), Grande Chaux ( 1840 m ) and Pointe de Riondet ( 1649 m ). To the east of the Vallée d'Aulps, the municipal soil extends to the peaks of the Pointes de Tréchauffex ( 1636 m ) and Mont Ouzon ( 1881 m ).
La Baume includes the hamlets of Les Esserts ( 785 m ), Le Promerat ( 793 m ) and Urine ( 840 m ) on the western slope of the valley and Nicodex ( 922 m ) in a hollow on the eastern slope of the Dranse de Morzine. Neighboring municipalities of La Baume are La Vernaz and La Forclaz in the north, Chevenoz , Vacheresse and Bonnevaux in the east, Le Biot and Seytroux in the south and Bellevaux and Vailly in the west.
history
The name is derived from the old French word baume (cave, grotto). La Baume only became an independent municipality in 1860, before that it belonged to Le Biot.
Attractions
The village church on a ledge over the Dranse de Morzine was built at the end of the 19th century. There is a chapel in Le Promerat.
