La Vernaz is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
La Vernaz is located at 811 m , eleven kilometers southeast of the city of Thonon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The mountain village extends in central Chablais , on a promontory high above the Dranse de Morzine and the Brevon, which flows in from the west, in the northern Savoy Alps .
The area of the 7.78 km ² municipal area includes a section of the Vallée d'Aulps. The eastern border forms the Dranse de Morzine, which runs roughly from south to north in a deeply cut valley. At the Gorges du Pont du Diable the valley is narrowed like a gorge. Below La Vernaz, the Dranse d'Abondance and the Brevon also flow with deep erosion valleys. In the south, the community area extends to the Lac du Jotty dam. From the course of the river, the communal floor extends westward over the steeply rising slope, which is partly traversed by rocky crests ( Rochers de la Garde , Rochers du Jotty ) to the limestone peaks of Grande Pointe des Journées ( 1725 m ) and Mont Billiat , on which 1894 m the highest point is reached by La Vernaz.
La Vernaz includes the hamlets of Trélachaud ( 755 m ) on the slope below the village and Le Jotty ( 700 m ) in the Vallée d'Aulps, near the Lac de Jotty reservoir. Neighboring communities of La Vernaz are Féternes and Vinzier in the north, La Forclaz in the east, La Baume in the south and Vailly and Reyvroz in the west.
history
The name La Vernaz is derived from the French word verne (alder). La Vernaz has been an independent municipality since 1740, before it was part of Le Biot .
Attractions
The village church dates from the 19th century. The remains of a fortification from the 16th century have been preserved in the valley of the Dranse. Another attraction is the natural bridge in the Gorges du Pont du Diable.
