About this picture

Weingarten (Baden) is a municipality in the northern district of Karlsruhe with around 10,000 inhabitants.

geography

Geographical location

Sallenbusch

Weingarten lies on the edge of the Kraichgau at the exit of the Walzbach valley into the Rhine valley . Ten kilometers southwest is Karlsruhe and ten kilometers northeast Bruchsal , whose districts Untergrombach and Obergrombach border the municipality to the north. The Ungeheuerklamm nature reserve is located on this municipal boundary .

Community structure

In addition to Weingarten itself, the municipality also includes the two agricultural settlements Sallenbusch and Sohl , located in the hills to the east and northeast of the village. The Weingartener Moor is located south of Weingarten . To the north-west of the town center between the train and the A5 motorway is the Waldbrücke district with around 1000 residents. It was originally founded mainly to settle expellees. The hamlet of Werrabronn lies in the south, on the border of the district .

At the end of the village in the direction of the Walzbachtal, row grave finds indicate an abandoned settlement , the name of which is not known.

history

Vineyard from the vineyards on the Setz

Settlements from the Roman and Merovingian times were found in the area . The village emerged from a courtyard of the Weißenburg monastery in what is now northern Alsace, which of course lost its property again in 985 through the so-called Salian church robbery . In 1504 Duke Ulrich von Württemberg destroyed the village, which after the reconstruction became a well-known market town . The watch tower was built in 1589 in order to be able to recognize approaching war hordes at an early stage. The tower was on the trade routes to Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Augsburg and Basel and was used by troops from the Electorate of the Palatinate as an observation tower for the escort teams. Weingarten was part of the Electoral Palatinate until 1803 , after which it came to the Grand Duchy of Baden as a result of the French coalition wars .

At the eastern end of Weingarten, near a paper mill, there are still small remains of the wall of a former moated castle , Schmalenstein Castle .

At the corner of Kirchstrasse and Keltergasse stood the synagogue of the Jewish community , of which a memorial plaque has been commemorating the Catholic Church opposite since 1985. During the November pogrom of 1938 , pupils instigated by two elementary school teachers raged inside and destroyed both the cult objects and memorial plaques of the Jewish soldiers who perished in the First World War . According to Alemannia Judaica , on the other hand, the synagogue was set on fire by 10 to 15 foreign National Socialists from Karlsruhe who, according to contemporary witnesses, are said to have driven to a truck. Since the fire could easily have spread to the surrounding buildings, it was extinguished by a local resident, but the synagogue was demolished soon after by party orders. The memorial plaque for those who died in the war was erected in 1939 on a private initiative at the Weingarten Jewish cemetery .

religion

Traditionally, about two thirds of the population were Protestant and one third Catholic, and there was also a Jewish community until 1938. This ratio has changed in recent decades due to immigration, religious changes and resignations: According to the 2011 census , 39.6% of the Weingarten population are Protestant, 32.2% Catholic, 28.2% belong to another or no religious community. In addition to the Protestant and Roman Catholic official churches , the Evangelical Free Church (Lebenswerk Weingarten), the Evangelical Liebenzeller Community , the Evangelical Methodist Church , the New Apostolic and Jehovah's Witnesses also have local communities, and there is also an independent Mennonite Brethren Congregation .
