Radical 113 , meaning “ ancestors , show, revere ” is one of 23 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with five strokes.
With 63 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are many characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.
The character developed from the pictorial representation of an altar . A T-shaped table can be seen in the seal script , above which a short horizontal line indicates the offerings for the spirits. 示 therefore has to do with ghost matters, expresses the mysterious, connected with superstition. Most of the signs ruled by 示 have the meaning field “religious, ghosts” such as 祭 (ji = organize memorial service, make sacrifices). In its old seal form, it shows meat (肉 rou) at the top left, a hand (手 shou) to the right and the altar below (示 in its original form). So here the sacrifice is clearly described in the form of a combined symbol. 祟 (sui = ghost) originally means misfortune caused by ghosts, 禁 (jin = forbid) meant. 林 (lin) only functions as a sound carrier. Among the characters that contain 示 as a component, there are also those that have nothing to do with spirits and beliefs such as 佘 (Xu, a family name), which emerged from a similar-looking character, and 票 (piao = card, Note), which originally looked different, led the fire (火) in the lower part, and 禀 (bng report to a superior) u. a. Here 示 is only a general component.
Spelling variant of the radical: 礻, is always left in connections; 4 strokes.
The variant 礻 is similar to the katakana sign ネ "ne".
The radical 113 礻 (five dashes) should not be confused with the radical 145 衤 (six dashes).
