The radical 52 with the meaning "young, small" is one of 31 traditional radicals in Chinese writing , which consist of three strokes.

With 7 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , it is very rare in the lexicon. The sign is similar to the zhuyin sign ㄠ  [ɑo̯].

The seal character of this radical shows a twisted short thread (in the form of the Arabic numeral 8). Today's Chinese word 幼儿 (= small child) is made up of 幺 (= small) and 力 (= strength).

幽 (= hidden) consists of twice 幺 (= small) and 山 (= mountain). In bronze script, 幺 also meant black. This sense has been preserved to this day in 玄 (= black) ( radical 95 ).

In 吆 (= to call out loud), 幺 takes the place of a sound carrier. In 幻 (= deceptive), 幺 has no meaning at all.

To there are the slightly different spelling .
