Details
Grand Slam tournaments
Australian Open
With a little luck, Kerber survived the first round of the first Grand Slam tournament of the season. Her opponent Misaki Doi had a match point, which Kerber was able to fend off to win the game 6: 7 4 , 7: 6 6 and 6: 3. She won the next three rounds to the quarterfinals in smooth two-set games. In the quarter-finals, she faced Viktoriya Asaranka , to whom she had previously lost all six games; the last at the tournament in Brisbane in the final. This time it should be different, Kerber won the match in two sets with 6: 3 and 7: 5 and reached the semi-finals. In this she won against Johanna Konta with 7: 5 and 6: 2 and moved into a Grand Slam final for the first time in her career. Your opponent there was Serena Williams , who reached the final without losing a set. Kerber won the final 6: 4, 3: 6 and 6: 4 and thus her first Grand Slam title.
French Open
After Kerber had to forego a start at the WTA tournament in Nuremberg due to a shoulder injury, she gave the all-clear for the French Open in this matter. At the draw for the first main round, the lot fell on Kiki Bertens , against whom she won in March of this year at the Miami Open , the only meeting so far, by giving up Bertens with 1: 6, 6: 2 and 3: 0. Bertens, for her part, went into the match with a lot of self-confidence, having won the tournament in Nuremberg the week before. Kerber lost the second Grand Slam tournament of the year in the first round with 1: 6, 6: 3 and 3: 6. Bertens made it to the semifinals in the course of the tournament.
Wimbledon
At Wimbledon, Kerber reached the semi-finals without losing a set. Only the quarter-finals against Simona Halep were a narrow victory with 7: 5 and 7: 6 2 . In the semifinals, Venus Williams , who won the tournament five times, was waiting . Kerber also won the semi-finals and was in the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time. As at the Australian Open, Serena Williams was her final opponent this time . Kerber lost the match 5-7 and 3-6. For Williams it was the 22nd Grand Slam title.
US Open
Before the tournament , Kerber was part of a quartet of players who all had the opportunity to be number one in the world, whereby Kerber was already in first place virtually before the tournament. After two of the contenders were eliminated quite early - Garbiñe Muguruza in the second round and Agnieszka Radwańska in the round of 16 - Serena Williams reached the semi-finals without much effort. Kerber had not lost a single set with victories over Polona Hercog , Mirjana Lučić-Baroni , Catherine Bellis , Petra Kvitová and Roberta Vinci . In the first semifinals, both of which took place in the night session , Williams had to deal with Karolína Plíšková , who only three weeks earlier in Cincinnati had destroyed Kerber's first chance at world number 1 by beating Kerber in the final. Plíšková won their semi-finals and reached a Grand Slam final for the first time, which also meant that Kerber was the new world number one from September 12th. Unimpressed by this news, Kerber did not give a set in the semifinals and won against Caroline Wozniacki 6: 4 and 6: 3. Kerber only gave a set in the final, but won a hard-fought game after 2:07 hours with 6: 3, 4: 6 and 6: 4. It was her second Grand Slam title.
Other tournaments
Stuttgart
After the successful Fed Cup weekend in Romania, Kerber traveled to her favorite tournament in Stuttgart. Last year she celebrated her fifth WTA title here. She played her first game in the last sixteen, for the first round she received a bye from the tournament organization. The match against Annika Beck lasted three sets, which Kerber won 4: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 1. In the quarter-finals against Carla Suárez Navarro , she only needed two sets to win 6: 2 and 6: 4. Petra Kvitová was her semi-final opponent, who she defeated 6: 4, 4: 6 and 6: 2 and moved into the final again. Here was the final opponent Laura Siegemund , who only played her way into the main field after qualifying . Kerber won the match in two straight sets 6: 4 and 6: 0. It was her ninth WTA title.
Olympic games
At the Olympic Games, she competed in singles and doubles with Andrea Petković . In doubles, she was eliminated in the first round against the Italian duo Errani / Vinci with 2: 6 and 2: 6. In the individual, she was one of the medal candidates - now number two in the world. The chances of a medal increased when Serena Williams was eliminated in the round of 16. Kerber reached the final after victories over Mariana Duque Mariño , Eugenie Bouchard , Samantha Stosur , Johanna Konta and Madison Keys without losing a set. Surprisingly, Mónica Puig from Puerto Rico , against whom Kerber had won both games in previous encounters , reached second place in the final . Kerber lost the match in three sets (4: 6, 6: 4, 1: 6), but won the silver medal.
Fed Cup
In the Fed Cup, Kerber won three out of four games. In the first round against Switzerland , which took place in Leipzig on February 6th and 7th , she won her first match against Timea Bacsinszky 6: 1 and 6: 3. The following day she lost to Belinda Bencic 6: 7 4 and 3: 6 and Germany 2: 3 against Switzerland.
In the play-offs against Romania on April 16 and 17, it was all about staying in the world group. Kerber won her first match against Irina-Camelia Begu 6: 2 and 6: 3, and on the second day against Simona Halep 6: 2 and 6: 2. Germany won the match 4-1.
