Who knows how close my end is to me? ( BWV 27) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach . He composed it in Leipzig in 1726 for the 16th Sunday after Trinity and performed it for the first time on October 6th, 1726.

Story and words

During his fourth year in office in Leipzig, Bach composed the cantata for the 16th Sunday after Trinity. The prescribed readings for Sunday were Eph 3:13–21  LUT , “Paul prays for the strengthening of the faith of the church in Ephesus”, and Lk 7,11–17  LUT , the awakening of the young man from Nain . In Bach's time, the gospel referred to the raising of the dead in general, combined with a longing for death. The unknown lyricist included the first verse of the song “Who knows how near me my end?” By Aemilie Juliane von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt in the opening sentence , which is sung to the melody of “ Who only lets God rule ”. Bach used the first stanza of “Welt ade! I am your tired ”from Johann Georg Albini and took over the sentence from Johann Rosenmüller . He first performed the cantata on October 6, 1726.

Occupation and structure

The cantata is made up of four soloists, soprano , alto , tenor and bass , four or five-part choir , horn , three oboes , oboe da caccia , obbligato organ , two violins , viola and basso continuo .
