Benedict Arnold (politician)

Benedict Arnold (born October 5, 1780 in Amsterdam , New York ; † March 3, 1849 there ) was an American politician . Between 1829 and 1831 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Matthias J. Bovee was his brother-in-law.

Career

Benedict Arnold was born and raised in Amsterdam in Montgomery County during the War of Independence . During this time he attended community schools. Then he went about commercial business, but was also a large landowner and philanthropist. Between 1813 and 1816 he held the post of Amsterdam supervisor . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1816 and 1817 .

As a result of a fragmentation of the Democratic Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the anti-Jacksonian faction . In the 1828 congressional election for the 21st Congress , Arnold was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Henry Markell on March 4, 1829 . In 1832 he was President of the Board of Trustees in the Village of Amsterdam. He no longer pursued his previous business, retired and lived in Amsterdam until his death on March 3, 1849. His body was buried in Green Hill Cemetery .
