The Camaro is a pony car (a sports car) from the US automobile brand Chevrolet , which belongs to the automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM). According to Chevrolet, the name "Camaro" is derived from the French word camarade , which translates as "comrade" or "friend".

In August 2002, the production of the fourth generation was stopped due to ever decreasing sales figures.

Only after a break of almost seven years did GM resume production of the series with the fifth generation in the spring of 2009. The prices for the Chevrolet Camaro started at 39,990 euros (as of July 2014).

Model history

The fifth Camaro is based on a concept model that was shown at the 2006 Detroit Motor Show . The design is based on the first generation of the 1967 model year. The vehicle was developed at the GM subsidiary Holden in Australia, and the car was produced in the Oshawa Car Assembly in Oshawa, Canada .

The concept vehicle was equipped with a 294 kW (400 hp), six-liter V8 engine from the Corvette and had cylinder deactivation to reduce fuel consumption.

Mass production of the coupé began on March 16, 2009, and that of the convertible in spring 2011.

Technology and sales

Base of the vehicle is the new Zeta-light - platform , which the Camaro with other rear wheel drive at Buick divided, Chevrolet and Holden. Six engines were available:

  • V6 (engine code: LLT) with 3564 cm³ displacement, maximum output 224 kW (305 PS) and 370 Nm maximum torque , direct injection , two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, available with six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic converter transmission
  • V6 (engine code: LFX) with 3564 cm³ displacement, maximum output 237 kW (322 PS) and 390 Nm torque
  • V8 (engine code: L99) with 6162 cm³ displacement, 6-speed automatic transmission, maximum output 298 kW (405 PS) and 556 Nm maximum torque
  • V8 (engine code: LS3 ) with 6162 cm³ displacement, 6-speed manual transmission, maximum output 318 kW (432 hp) and 570 Nm maximum torque

Both V8s have a central camshaft and two valves per cylinder.

  • V8 (engine code: LS7) with 7008 cm³ displacement, 6-speed manual transmission, maximum output 376 kW (511 PS) and 652 Nm maximum torque
  • V8 Supercharged (engine code: LSA) with 6162 cm³ displacement, maximum power 432 kW (587 PS) and 754 Nm maximum torque

The tank capacity is 72 liters.

For the first time, the Camaro has independent suspension and disc brakes on all four wheels, six airbags, speed-dependent power steering , ESP and traction control . The V8 engine with engine code L99 also has cylinder deactivation (called Active Fuel Management ) to reduce fuel consumption.

Depending on the engine and equipment, the base price of the vehicle was between approximately 25,000 and 72,000 US dollars.

On January 17, 2009, the first-made fifth generation Camaro was auctioned at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction . The highest bidder paid $ 350,000; the money was donated to the American Heart Association nonprofit .

In 2010, a Camaro Transformers Special Edition was launched in cooperation with toy manufacturer Hasbro . It was available as a Camaro LT or SS with the usual drive combinations. The color was Rally Yellow with black accents and corresponding logos.

Distribution to Europe

In Germany, the Camaro Coupé reached dealerships via independent importers shortly after its launch in the US. Direct sales began in November 2011.

A slightly modified version of the 2012 model year was offered for Europe. The equipment was based on the SS version with the V8 engine LS3 with 318 kW (432 PS) or L99 298 kW (405 PS), RS package and other equipment such as a rear view camera with display in the inside mirror, larger side mirrors with integrated indicators and new designed taillights with LED light in the design of sunglasses. The letters "SS" on the outside and inside as equipment designations were omitted due to the historical background of this abbreviation in the EU models.

The chassis was retuned for the 2012 model year and equipped with stronger stabilizers on the front and rear axles. Test reports in automobile magazines described a better price-performance ratio for the EU Camaro compared to the competitors Porsche 911 S and BMW 650i Coupé: The base price for the Coupé was 39,990 euros (41,990 euros with automatic transmission), the convertible cost 44,990 euros ( 46,990 euros with automatic transmission; as of August 2012).

safety

When carried out in 2009 US-NCAP - Crash Test received the vehicle in the standings, four out of five stars in crash test conducted in 2011 five out of five stars.

Facelift

In September 2013, the revised Camaro was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt. While it has been available in the US since the middle of the same year, sales in Europe began in January 2014.

The front section was redesigned, with the lower air inlet being a bit higher and wider. The radiator grille was a bit narrower to compensate. At the rear, the split taillights were replaced by horizontal ones, the trunk lid modified and a different diffuser integrated. The daytime running lights were made using LED technology and are located in the main headlight and there are fog lights.

A new Camaro Z / 28 was also presented. The Z / 28, with 377 kW (513 PS), which is a little less powerful but is 130 kg lighter, took 7: 37.47 minutes for a lap on the Nordschleife in the rain.

Camaro ZL1

With the ZL1, a new top model was presented at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2011. This was initially only available as a coupe from spring 2012, but the convertible followed after the model year change. With a maximum output of 432 kW (587 PS) it is the most powerful Camaro to date and at the same time it was the most powerful convertible from Chevrolet until the Corvette C7 Z06 Cabriolet was released in 2015. Many parts of the ZL1 were specially developed for this vehicle, such as the new version of the Magnetic Ride chassis. The ZL1 achieved a time of 7: 41.27 min on the Nürburgring.

The Camaro in the film

The Camaro has been in all previous parts of the blockbuster series Transformers prominently placed . In the first part of 2007 a Z28 from 1977 and a replica of the Camaro Concept 2009 were used. The latter was created at Saleen in collaboration with GM. The original shapes of the concept car were used for the fiberglass body. The chassis was taken over and adapted from a Pontiac GTO . Most attachments including the "aluminum" wheels were dummies made of fiberglass.

In Transformers 2: The Revenge of 2009, a prototype or pre-production model of the Camaro Z / 28, which is not yet available for sale, was used. In Transformers 3 (2011), “Bumblebee” anticipated elements of the upcoming ZL1, and a concept car was also used in Transformers: Era of Downfall (2014) .

In 2013, in the film The Last Stand , Arnold Schwarzenegger competes in a Camaro ZL1 against the villain who is racing towards Mexico in a tuned Corvette ZR1 . Both vehicles are largely destroyed in a corn field.

In the TV series Hawaii Five-0 , the main actors drive a silver Camaro LT / RS Coupé from 2010. A black facelift Camaro 2SS RS from 2014 in the 1LE model variant has been used since the beginning of the fourth season.
