Senior Citizens' Convention (University)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Senior Citizens' Convents (SC) are associations of corps at a university or college . The German-Baltic student associations at the University of Tartu and the University of Tallinn as well as the Presidential Convention and the Presidential Convention of the Latvian Women's Associations in Riga have Chargierten-Convente (Ch! C!).

history

Formation of the Corps

The Nationes already knew a SC. "Disputes between the individual nations were brought before the Senior Citizens' Convention, which in Rostock is first mentioned in 1647." At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, student associations (historically) designated according to their country emerged at German universities . In the “lawless” space of the university (and in public) they gave students protection and support. They were led by senior citizens who agreed on the solution of common tasks in the senior citizens' convention. The first SC comments from Frankfurt / Oder (1798), Halle / Saale (1799), Erlangen (1802), Heidelberg (1803), Marburg (1807), Leipzig (1808), Tübingen (1808) and Jena (1809) have been preserved ).

At the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , Rhenania and Franco-Badenia agreed the first SC comment in 1803 and the second in July 1806. At the Philipps University of Marburg there was a Rhenish, a Hessian and a Westphalian Landsmannschaft. Suevia I, Obersuevia and Franconia I had joined forces at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . Guestphalia designed an SC-Comment at the University of Jena . August Jäger knew the senior citizens' conventions in Jena, Halle, Heidelberg, Erlangen, Würzburg, Marburg, Giessen, Tübingen, Freiburg, Munich and Strasbourg from his own experience . The humorous descriptions are often sarcastic and (sometimes still today) appropriate.

The SC Comments regulated disputes and duels , which were often carried out "informally" at the beginning of the 19th century. The SC comment should prevent such random disputes. The original fraternity also attracted corps students and stimulated the formation of small corps from which many corps emerged in the 1820s . In the student body, the senior citizens' convents took on the leadership role that they maintained in the Weimar Republic . The Free State of Prussia with the Minister of Culture Carl Heinrich Becker disputed them, and National Socialism destroyed them.

Robert Paschke writes on the role of the senior citizens' convent in the early 19th century :

“It has often been claimed that the corps wanted to establish a claim to power within the student body by applying their comments to all students. At least that was not the intention of the Corps in the beginning. They just wanted, as they did for their corps and corps members, to create an authority for the entire student body that not only ensured order in boys' affairs, but also felt responsible for maintaining them. "

- Robert Paschke

Senior Citizens' Convention

SC shields at the Kösener Congress in the Courageous Knight

In terms of subsidiarity , the senior citizens' convents are the constitutive element of the Kösener SC Association. In contrast, the Weinheim Senior Citizens 'Convent (like the Rudolstadt Senior Citizens' Convention ) unites the individual corps, some of which are organized in cross-local SCs. A mixed SC with Kösener and Weinheimer Corps is the Munich Senior Citizens' Convention . The Weinheimer Corps Agronomia Hallensis in Göttingen has a seat without a vote in the Göttingen Senior Citizens' Convention . The Kösener Corps in Austria do not know the distinction between academic and technical corps (since 1869).

Kösener single SCs exist in Augsburg, Bochum, Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt (Oder), Constance, Linz, Mainz, Münster (Westphalia), Passau, Potsdam, Regensburg, Saarbrücken, Salzburg, Trier and Zurich.

Aachen

The SC zu Aachen was founded on December 3, 1871 by the Corps Guestphalia and Rhenania . Teutonia joined the SC on July 1, 1876 as the third corps, suspended in August 1877 and relocated the corps operations to the TH Braunschweig on December 19, 1878 . Guestphalia suspended on May 28, 1878, after she had to suspend twice briefly (from October 30, 1874 to December 2, 1874 and from October 22, 1877 to the beginning of 1878). Rhenania therefore dissolved the SC on May 31, 1878, but continued to exist as a single corps until October 15, 1880 and reconstituted on May 7, 1892 at the TH Braunschweig. After the academic association Delta had declared itself a corps on January 4, 1903 and was accepted into the Weinheim Senior Citizens' Convention on January 5, 1903 , the SC zu Aachen was re-established on March 2, 1903 with the guestphalia reconstituted on the same day. The Corps Borussia Clausthal moved its headquarters to the RWTH Aachen on March 14, 1903 and was admitted to the SC on the same day. The university dissolved the SC on January 20, 1904 due to disputes over rank on the occasion of the Reichsgründungskommerses . The dissolution of Guestphalias and Deltas was repealed on March 1, 1904, that of Borussia on March 19, 1904. Guestphalia merged with the academic association Markomannia on November 11, 1904, and from that day on belonged to the SC as Marko-Guestphalia. Borussia already suspended on February 26, 1907 and on April 20, 1907 relocated the corps operations to the TH Munich , where they joined the SC of the WSC at the TH Munich.

The Kösener Corps Borussia Breslau zu Cologne and Aachen maintains active operations only in Aachen, but belongs to the Cologne Senior Citizens' Convention.

Caesuras

During the First World War the corps operations in Aachen were idle; the SC continued to exist as an institution. On October 23, 1920, the Corps Montania was accepted into the SC. It was founded on November 22nd, 1872 as the Academic Association of Chemists and Metalworkers at the Polytechnic School in Aachen and in 1882 it was renamed the Academic Association of Chemists, Miners and Metalworkers . In the winter semester 1902/03 it became a colored connection with its own weapons, from the summer semester 1905 it was called Montania, Academic Association of Chemists, Miners and Metalworkers and from the summer semester 1909 Academic Association Montania . On October 23, 1920, she adopted corp principles. After the suspension of the WSC on October 20, 1935, the member corps of the SC zu Aachen also suspended: Marko-Guestphalia at the beginning of the winter semester 1935/36, Delta on December 21, 1935, and Montania on October 26, 1935. The SC also listened Aachen to insist.

After the Second World War , the three corps were initially resurrected as academic associations: Marko-Guestphalia on July 7, 1947 as Corona academica , Delta on December 19, 1949 as AV Pyramid and Montania on November 22, 1947 as Academic Collegium . When Marko-Guestphalia reconstituted as Corps on July 8, 1950, Montania on February 21, 1951 and Delta on July 28, 1951, the SC in Aachen revived. On September 8, 1951, the Corps Saxo-Montania was reconstituted after Montania Freiberg, Saxo-Borussia Freiberg, Marcomannia Dresden and Franconia Dresden had merged in Aachen. Marcomannia Dresden and Franconia Dresden had already met on September 28, 1934 to form Franco-Marcomannia. On November 10, 1951, Teutonia Freiberg reconstituted as Palaeo-Teutonia at RWTH. On December 5, 1952, Saxonia-Berlin relocated its active operations to Aachen. On May 7, 1953, the SC expanded to seven corps through the reconstitution of Albingia Dresden, whose old rulers were merged on April 4, 1953 with the old rulers of Alania Darmstadt.

The statutes of the WSC do not allow a single corps to form a SC at a university location. That is why the Corps Teutonia Dresden belonged to the SC in Aachen as an associated corps from 1966 to 1993, when it relocated the corps operations to the Ruhr University Bochum .

Freiberg heritage

Franconia Freiberg resumed corps operations as Corps Franconia Fribergensis zu Aachen on November 28, 1953 , but had to do without the green-white-red colors out of consideration for Montania's same colors. As in Freiberg from 1838 to 1852, she used the colors green-gold-red again . With the reconstitution of Franconia Fribergensis, the SC reached its greatest strength of eight active corps, which it should hold until Albingia in Marko-Guestphalia on October 12, 1996. Until the re-establishment of Saxo-Borussia from Saxo-Montania and reconstitution in Freiberg in 1992, the SC zu Aachen housed all the corps of the former SC zu Freiberg.

Aschaffenburg

Memorial to the Aschaffenburg corps students who fell in 1870/71

The Aschaffenburger Senioren-Convent was the union and the highest decision-making body of the forest corps at the Royal Bavarian Forestry School . A few months after its reopening, the Corps Hubertia was founded in 1844 . The Corps Arminia followed in 1845 and the Corps Hercynia in 1847. According to Wilhelm Fabricius , the three corps were still life corps in 1926 , which was an exception even then. Their competitive relationship was characterized by “endless arguments and constant PP suites ”.

The SC was the point of contact and last resort in the event of conflicts, and in the second half of the 19th century increasingly also in the forest civil service. From 1866 onwards, the Aschaffenburger Corps in Würzburg could take part in the local SC celebrations in colors . How close they have always been to the Kösener Corps is shown by the fact that their members could become pastors' daughters in Erlangen . In honor of the forest candidates who died in the Franco-Prussian War , the three corps erected a memorial that has been preserved in Friedrichstrasse opposite the justice building.

When the forestry college was relocated from Aschaffenburg to Munich in 1910, the three Aschaffenburg corps also came to the Ludwig Maximilians University . The Aschaffenburger Zeitung published a special edition on July 31, 1910, in which the history of the university was described in great detail on four pages. Since the Aschaffenburger Corps were accepted into the Munich SC of the Kösener Corps, they are likely to have contributed significantly to the unusual agreement between Kösener and Weinheimer corps students in Munich.

Since 1895 there has been an active association of old corps students in the Aschaffenburg area. Until 1910 it existed parallel to the ASC. 100 years after the dissolution of the Aschaffenburg University, the Aschaffenburg AHSC organized various commemorative events that were reported in the local media.

Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe Corps in the WSC Chronicle 1927

The Karlsruhe Polytechnic was founded in 1825 and essentially comprised the so-called technical schools for architecture, mechanical engineering, forestry, engineering and post office boxes as well as a preparatory course, the "mathematical classes". The students at the Polytechnic attracted attention with their rough and rowdy behavior, so that Corps students from Gießen and Heidelberg enrolled in Karlsruhe wanted to remedy the situation by founding the Corps. To this end, five corps students and like-minded people founded the Corps Franconia. It was the first student union in Karlsruhe and the first ever student union at a technical university.

The first corps were:

  • Franconia , 1839 green-white-red with green caps
  • Palatia, 1840, red-white-gold with red caps
  • Nassovia, 1842, blue-white-orange with white caps
  • Rhenania, 1844
  • Vandalia, 1846
  • Bavaria , 1847, initially with red caps

On December 4, 1839, the first SC was formed. However, it was temporarily dissolved again, mostly as a result of disputes, first between Franconia and Palatia, and later (late 1847) between Franconia, Nassovia and Bavaria. During the years 1854/55 the corps disappeared from the scene and were also banned. In 1854 a new SC was created between Franconia and Bavaria without any colors being worn. In 1854/55 the Bavarians changed their hats to blue because this color was less noticeable. Times were very bad. In 1855 the SC disbanded and all relations between the two corps were severed.

  • Saxonia , 1856
  • Borussia 1857 to 1858
  • Alemannia , founded in 1860 by students from Hanover as a country team

Whitsun 1864, the first ASC was held in Weinheim by the SC of Karlsruhe, Zurich, Stuttgart and Hanover and the WSC.

  • Frisia , 1886, was founded in 1884 by members of the former Landsmannschaft Teutonia from Zurich as a Landsmannschaft

Marburg

Emmerich Berner

After the battle of Jena and Auerstedt , the sole rule of the student orders and wreaths ended . The struggle with the university authorities and disputes among the students led to dissolutions, escapes into secrecy, splits, reconstitutions, new foundations and changes to the colors and circles. Hassia can be traced back to the Hessian Landsmannschaft, which was founded on November 8, 1806 and reopened on June 23, 1807. On June 25, 1807, she met with the Rhenish and Westphalian Landsmannschaft for a senior citizens' convention. In order to avoid disputes caused by the “fox wedges”, a cantonal division was made. With Kassel as the center, the districts were marked on the map. Every student from such a district fell for the relevant country team (early modern times) as a renonce . He could not enter another without permission from the SC. The Rhenanen disappeared in 1824/25. In the SC that still consisted of Hassia and Guestphalia, Teutonia , Lahnania and Hanovia stepped in for it. In 1827 , five corps were still represented at the 300th anniversary of the Philipps University of Marburg . Lahnania and Hanovia could not hold off. The Corps Schaumburgia, Vandalia and Marcomannia, founded in the early 1830s, only existed for a short time. Around the turn of the year 1837/39 the Westphalia finally dissolved. At the beginning of the winter semester 1838/39, only the Hassia and the Teutonia existed in Marburg. With Teutonia (1825), Hasso-Nassovia (1839) and Guestphalia (1840), the SC zu Marburg joined the KSCV in 1856. Expelled from Strasbourg by the Treaty of Versailles , Rhenania Strasbourg (1919) and Suevia Strasbourg (1928) came to the SC.

Rheno-Guestphalia

When the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität received a law faculty again in 1901, it became a full university . This fulfilled the prerequisites for founding a corps in Münster that could become a member of the Kösener Seniors Convents Association . Various attempts to found a new corps or to revive a suspended corps failed. A group of Marburg Teutons , Freiburg Rhenans and Tübingen Rhenans finally agreed on names, colors and circles . So on July 29, 1908, the Corps Rheno-Guestphalia came into being. It founded the SC, which was accepted into the KSCV in 1909. In 1919 the Suevia from Strasbourg came to Münster as the second corps. However, the Strasbourg Corps left Münster again in 1928. In the Catholic Minster the current connection had not succeeded in gaining enough new active members and therefore the corps operations were relocated to Marburg. In the years 1921, 1958 and 2004 the SC zu Münster provided the chairman of the oKC .

In 1958 a second corps came to Münster with Guestphalia Halle . She had survived nine years in the Corps Saxonia Frankfurt . Guestphalia also left the SC zu Münster in 2006 after almost five decades and returned to Halle (Saale) . Since then, Rheno-Guestphalia has been the only corps among the 37 active connections in Münster.

SC to Tharandt: Silvania, Hubertia and Saxonia

Hubertia was founded on November 3rd, 1869 as a connection with the colors spruce shoot green – gold – black. It emerged from the so-called Burgkellergesellschaft zu Tharandt, an association with the principles of weapons students, but without a constitution . Hubertia, Tanne and the Society Club in the German House founded the SC in 1869. There were also Silvania (1859/1867) and Saxonia (1871). Hubertia declared herself on June 3, 1883 as the first Tharandter connection to the Corps and applied for admission to the WSC that same year; but this was not granted. After the disputes were settled in 1885, the Tanne connection was also included in the SC as Corps Saxonia. In November 1885 the Tharandter SC was recognized as equal by the SC zu Freiberg and Dresden. Admitted to the KSCV on January 18, 1923, Hubertia was suspended on May 9, 1932. On the same day, the Hubertia founded the Corps Hercynia with the members of the Corps Saxonia Tharandt. The old men were taken over on the same day. Hercynia suspended in 1935 and merged with Hubertia Munich in 1956 . Tharandter Huberten were Eugen Ostwald and Erich Zieger .

Remarks

  1. Due to the re-establishment phase after the Second World War, Borussia Greifswald and Hassia were hopelessly divided.
  2. Berner wears four Marburg colors: Hassia, Teutonia, Marcomannia, Alemannia
  3. ^ Rheno-Guestphalia, Rhenania Freiburg, Teutonia Marburg and Rhenania Tübingen form the Iron Cartel, formerly known as the "coal cartel".
  4. The founding years given in brackets do not match the foundation dates because the corps declaration of the respective federal government is considered the foundation date and none of the Viennese corps was founded as such; see Kösener corps lists 1960.
