The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1971/72 season was the seventh edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition began in September 1971; the final was played in November and December 1972. A total of 16 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended the title for the third time in a row.

Mode and participants

The national champions of the game year 1970/71 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was played in the knockout system in a two-legged manner. The defending champion CSKA Moscow and the Czechoslovakian champions ASD Dukla Jihlava were seeded for the semifinals.
