Career

Beginnings

Émilien Jacquelin took part in international competitions for the first time in 2014 as part of the Junior World Championships in Presque Isle . There he won his first medal in the individual with a third place. At the Junior World Championships next year in Minsk he won bronze again, this time with Aristide Bègue , Felix Cottet Puinel and Fabien Claude in the relay. With a fourth place in the individual race, he just missed his previous year's position and a podium finish. In the next season Jacquelin started for the first time in races of the IBU Cup . At the Junior European Championships in 2016 on the Pokljuka , he won silver in the pursuit and is fifth in both the individual and the sprint. The 2016/17 season was his most successful so far, with fifth place in the IBU Overall Cup.

First Olympic Games (2017/18 season)

In the 2017/18 season , Émilien Jacquelin won the first race of the IBU Cup in Sjusjøen . He then took part in the season opener of the Biathlon World Cup in Östersund and achieved his best position so far in the World Cup with a 28th place. With Jean-Guillaume Béatrix , Simon Desthieux and Quentin Fillon Maillet , he finished third in the relay race in Hochfilzen . At the World Cup in Antholz , Italy , he achieved fifth place in the sprint, 11 seconds behind third-placed. In the ensuing pursuit, he came in sixth. Based on these results, he qualified for the mass start, which he finished 28th. After the World Cup in Antholz he took part in the European Championships and was able to improve to 17th place after a 37th place in the sprint in the pursuit. Together with Julia Simon , he won the silver medal in the single mixed competition.

After he finished the European Championships, he started at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . In the individual he reached the 77th rank and with the relay the fifth rank. After the Winter Games, Jacquelin started again in the World Cup and reached a 35th place in the pursuit race in Tyumen. In the overall ranking of the World Cup, he reached 46th place. At the end of the season, he and Swetlana Mironowa were named Rookie of the Year by the IBU .

First World Championships (2018/19 season)

The 2018/19 season was the first season for Émilien Jacquelin in which he started exclusively in the Biathlon World Cup. He started his debut in the season with a 28th place in the individual on the Pokljuka. In the following sprint he was only 36th, but was then able to improve in the pursuit by 20 places to 16th place. Similar results continued in Hochfilzen, Nové Město na Moravě and Oberhof. In the sprint in Ruhpolding, he finished ninth and thus achieved his first top ten result this season. In Antholz, Jacquelin crossed the finish line again in ninth place, this time in the mass start. At the competitions in North America, he could not build on these achievements.

The world championships in Östersund were his first. However, he only started in the sprint and pursuit. After finishing 24th in the sprint, he was 29th in the pursuit. At the season finale he was able to reach 19th place again. In the overall ranking he reached the 24th place. Also in the sprint classification and the mass start classification was 24th, in the pursuit classification 22nd.

World Champion (2019/20 season)

Émilien Jacquelin at the sprint in Oberhof 2020

The 2019/20 season started more successfully for Jacquelin than the previous one. In the very first race, a sprint, he was eleventh. In the individual, he finished fourth despite two penalty minutes, his best result so far. In the following competitions in Hochfilzen he reached his first podium. After an 18th place in the sprint, he moved up to third in the pursuit. He started the competitions in Annecy with a 20th place in the sprint, in the pursuit he then came second. In the mass start he came in second behind Johannes Thingnes Bø and was able to increase his best performance again. Jacquelin started the new year in Oberhof with a second place in the sprint. However, he was the last to finish the mass start after nine penalty laps. Together with Martin Fourcade , Simon Desthieux and Quentin Fillon Maillet, he won his first relay race in Ruhpolding. With Anaïs Bescond he also won the single mixed relay on the Pokljuka. In the individual races, however, he was unable to build on the previous results.

Jacquelin started the world championships in Antholz with a sixth place. In the pursuit he was able to prevail on the final round against Johannes Thingnes Bø and became world champion. After he had not started in the singles, he was with Bescond third in the singles mixed competition. In the same line-up as in the last season victory, the French world championship was won. This was the first season title for France since 2001 . He then finished the world championships with a bronze medal in the mass start.

In the last races he started with a tenth place in the sprint in Nové Město na Moravě. In the relay race, he only reloaded twice instead of three times, which meant that the French relay team received a time penalty of two minutes and finished 15th in the mass start. At the early season finale in Kontiolahti , he finished third in both sprint and pursuit. He finished fifth in the overall standings, but was only the third-best Frenchman. He was seventh in the sprint and sixth in the mass start. He won the pursuit ranking two points ahead of Martin Fourcade and Quentin Fillon Maillet. With that he won his first small crystal ball.
