history

Before the colonization by European settlers, Indians from the Maliseet tribe lived in this area. In small groups or individually, they hunted and fished in the woods and in the Saint-John Valley. In 1783, Pierre Lizotte and Pierre Duperre established a trading post near the mouth of the Madawaska River . About 250 Indian families lived here at that time. In 1831 only about six left.

A first group of settlers reached the area in June 1785. They came from near Fredericton and came at the invitation of Lizotte and Duperre. At that time, the area west of the Madawaska River was not under the jurisdiction of New Brunswick, so it was not one of the first land concessions granted by New Brunswick in 1790.

Originally known as Plantation of Dionne founded by the missionary Father Dionne, who built the first Catholic church of St. Luce, Frenchville was on 23 February 1869 the name of Dickeyville, in honor of Major William Dickey from Fort Kent , as Town founded. The name was changed to Frenchville on January 26, 1871 to reflect the nationality of the residents. Even today, 79.6% of the population are French-speaking.

The location on the rivers favored the construction of various mills. There were two sawmills and two gristmills in Frenchville at Gagnon Brook, and a small sawmill at Cyr Brook . There were other small sawmills, a cloth mill, and a starch factory in town. The sandy, permeable soil was well suited for agriculture, especially buckwheat, oats, peas, wheat and potatoes were grown, and forestry was also a livelihood. Maple, cedar and fir trees grow in the town area .

The Frenchville Railroad Station and Water Tank are a listed historic railroad museum in Frenchville. The station and water tank were built in 1910 by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 under number 95000723. The station was active until 1971, although the water tank became obsolete in 1958 after the route was used by diesel locomotives. Nevertheless, it remained in operation until 1981. The town of Frenchville used it as a water reservoir for their fire department. The town had previously bought the water tank from the railway company.
