The elongated Waldhufendorf lies in a south-west-north-east direction in the north of the Erzgebirge district. The lowest point is the Wilisch valley . The highest point is the Auerbacher Höhe at 640 m.

history

German Hosiery Museum Gelenau

Documentary mention of the place initially took the form of personal names, the first time in 1256, as a Heinricus de Gelene has testified that on the day Hofteich or Hofwall called lowland castle is suspected. Gelynowe first appeared as an independent place name in 1299.

From the beginning, the place was divided into two lords. The northern side of the town and the manor belonged to the rule Waldenburg (later: Amt Wolkenstein ), the southern side of the town to the rule Schellenberg (later: Amt Augustusburg ). In 1533 the Schönberg family bought the village and the manor (owned until 1907).

With the advent of hosiery from the middle of the 18th century, the predominantly rural economic structure of the place was changed significantly. Many residents took advantage of the new employment opportunity. Later, through the construction of a mill , the industrialization initiated and followed other textile factories in the town.

With the arrival of more workers, the population rose steadily during the 19th century. Gelenau was one of the largest villages in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century.

The coat of arms connects the community's history and economic position. The lion in the upper part of the coat of arms comes from the coat of arms of the von Schönberg family, which played a key role in the history of the community. While the crossed coils symbolize the local textile industry, the ploughshare is a symbol of the local agriculture.

Community partnerships

A partnership with the Lower Saxony municipality of Hasbergen has existed since 1990 . Partnership relationships were established in 1996 with the Danish municipality of Skørping (part of the municipality of Rebild since 2007 ). The Czech community Nové Sedlo was added in 1999, Nagyhegyes in Hungary in 2000 and Parry Sound in Canada in 2001 .

Memorials

• The fire brigade memorial commemorates five firefighters who were killed in the flood on June 9, 1882 . A total of ten people died in the storm in Gelenau.
• A war memorial in the parish garden commemorates those who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 .
• Also in the parish garden is the war memorial for the fallen of the First and Second World Wars . The standing figure of the soldier mourning his fallen comrade had to be removed in 1947 by order of the communist rulers and was then buried in the ground. It was not set up again until 1991.
• Near the cinema there is a grove of honor for the victims of fascism , inside a memorial stone in memory of the communist Ernst Grohmann and the social democrat Emil Oettel , who died of the abuse suffered during the Nazi regime.

Economy and Infrastructure

The federal road 95 (Chemnitz – Oberwiesenthal) runs through the village . Until 1972 the place had a train station on the narrow-gauge railway Wilischthal-Thum .

Local traffic in Gelenau started on August 26, 2013, still in trial operation in the first year. This decision was confirmed by a survey carried out by the municipality of Gelenau. Local traffic is operated by the Regionalverkehr Erzgebirge GmbH transport company.

Sports

Gelenau is mainly known regionally for its wrestlers. The club RSK "Jugendkraft 1898" Gelenau rose in 2000 to the 2nd Wrestling League. The relegation took place ten years later. In the 2012 season, the RSK Gelenau finished sixth in the regional league.
