) is aLocation and economy
Nijkerk is located in the far west of the province, west of the Veluwe and only about 11 km northeast of Amersfoort (Prov. Utrecht). The A28 Utrecht- Amersfoort- Zwolle motorway runs alongside Nijkerk. The city has a small train station on the Amersfoort - Harderwijk - Zwolle railway line . Hoevelaken is located south of Nijkerk, on the A1 Amsterdam - Hengelo - Bad Bentheim - Berlin motorway . One of the oldest motorway junctions (Knooppunt Hoevelaken, junction of A1 and A28) in the Netherlands is located at Hoevelaken. The Arkemheen polder is northwest of Nijkerk . This is crossed by a canal to the IJsselmeer with a lock , which was renewed in 1987 , so that Nijkerk can also be reached by inland waterways. Nijkerk and Hoevelaken both have a lot of small businesses. Livestock farming, the service sector and tourism are also important to the municipality's economy. Nijkerk is the seat of the branch of the Danish-Swedish dairy cooperative Arla for the Netherlands.
history
Nijkerk was built around 1225, whena "nije Kercke" (= new church) was builton the site of a chapel where St. Ludger is said to have preachedaround 800. The Erckemede polder, = Arkemheen, was diked in 1356. This gave the village large, fertile pastures. In the Middle Ages, Nijkerk, which lived from cattle farming and trading in hay, wason the border between the Duchy of Geldern and the diocese of Utrecht. After the destruction in 1412 the Duke granted funds to the brave Nijkerkern occasion of rebuilding their village a year later the city charter . However, the city of Nijkerk was not spared further disasters: it was ravaged by major fires (1421 and 1540), wars (the Eighty Years War 1568–1648), a flood (1916) and epidemics (including a plague epidemic in 1636). Some residents of Nijkerk escaped to the new colonies of North America in the 17th centuryand were involved in the establishment of the cities of Albany (New York) and Schenectady . In contrast to many other places in the Netherlands, the 18th century was a heyday for Nijkerk. Tobacco was grownin Nijkerk as early as 1636, andthis product was widely soldin Amsterdam and other cities. A canal to the Zuidersee was dug in 1720. Trade and shipping flourished. The good times ended in 1814 when Ludwig Napoleon banned tobacco growing as he extended the monopoly on French tobacco to the Netherlands. The printing and publishing house of the Callenbach company, known for u. a. Christian children's books, moved to Nijkerk in 1854, but moved to Kampen around1985. Nijkerk sufferedsome damagefrom fighting during World War II in 1940 and 1945.
Hoevelaken was built around 1132 when a castle was built there. It developed into a quiet farming village. The moors were reclaimed in long, narrow plots. In the 20th century, Hoevelaken expanded significantly when commuters who worked in the surrounding towns settled in the village. The A1 motorway also brought jobs and thus prosperity: industrial areas were created along this trunk road. Hoevelaken Castle was burned down in 1672 and the new building demolished in 1926. Today's country house is now an office building.
