history
The place Indio was created as a stopover on the Southern Pacific Railroad between Yuma , Arizona and Los Angeles . First the settlement was called Indian Wells , which is now the name of a neighboring town . However, because many other places were already called Indian Wells, the city was given the Spanish name Indio . With the arrival of the railroad in 1876, the settlement began to develop; the first permanent house was the railway depot with its hotel. It was built in the Craftman style . The Southern Pacific Railroad tried to make the life of the workers as pleasant as possible in view of the inhospitable area, so the hotel contained an elegant dining room and held dance evenings on Fridays.
Founded as a railway settlement, Indio quickly transformed into an agricultural area. Thanks to artesian wells , onions , cotton , grapes , citrus plants and date palms could grow well; later the All-American Canal was also used for irrigation. Even so, the water remained a problem for Indians, as the city was flooded several times before the storm sewers were built in the Coachella Valley .
Entrepreneurs also discovered Indio for themselves. Dr. Harry Smiley and his wife Nell got stuck in their car on the way to Los Angeles and became early Indians. They gained influence and helped shape the area. AG Tingman owned a business and became Indio's first postmaster , but was also known to take advantage of miners for their work. Later, Dr. June Robertson McCarroll moved to Indio and became a respected medical doctor and philanthropist . After being hit by cars several times, McCarroll worked with the local women's club to have white stripes painted on the streets of California. Indio was able to establish itself quickly and retain the character created by the railway era.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Indio was no longer a lifeless railway town. Schools and the La Casita Hospital were built and many families settled. From 1920 onwards, Indio had between one thousand and two thousand year-round residents, and in the winter months with 2500 to 5000 residents even significantly more. Nevertheless, the neighboring towns of Coachella and Thermal soon exceeded these numbers. Nonetheless, Indio continued to grow and was granted town charter in 1930. On September 6, 1930, the shopkeeper Fred Kohler was the first Indios resident to receive a trade license.
When many residents later moved to the newer cities to the west such as Palm Desert , Indio had to cope with a setback. At the moment this trend seems to be reversing again and the east of the Coachella Valley is playing a more central role.
politics
Indio is part of the 28th District in the California Senate , currently represented by Democrat Ted Lieu , and the 56th District of the California State Assembly , represented by Democrat V. Manuel Perez . Indio is also a member of California's 36th Congressional District , which has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R + 1 and is represented by Democrat Raul Ruiz .
Monroe Street, which runs vertically through the city, represents a kind of socio-economic limit for the political attitudes of the citizens: the areas to the east of the street are more democratic, while voters in the western part of the city tend towards the Republican Party. In 2001 Forbes Magazine classified the western part of Indios along with the western neighboring towns of La Quinta , Bermuda Dunes and Indian Wells as one of the most affluent areas in the United States.

Two significant annual festivals are the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival and the Indio International Tamale Festival. The former is held every February at the Riverside County Fairgrounds in downtown Indios on California State Route 111 . It has been celebrating the date harvest in the Coachella Valley since 1947 . The Tamale Festival is always held in December in Indio's old town and holds two Guinness world records : The festival in 2000 was the world's largest tamale festival with 120,000 visitors , and with a length of 12.2 meters and 0.3 meters in diameter, the largest tamals are produced.
In 1993, the Pearl Jam band held a concert at the Empire Polo Club , and six years later the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was launched. At the famous music festival, stars and bands such as Prince , Paul McCartney , Radiohead , Dr. Dre , Snoop Dogg , Pixies , The Cure , The White Stripes , Jay-Z , Tool , Beastie Boys , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Jane's Addiction and Roger Waters . The event was extended to three days in 2007.
In May 2007, the organizer of the Coachella Festival organized the Stagecoach Festival for the first time , a two-day country music festival that takes place the weekend after Coachella. Musicians and bands such as George Strait , Kenny Chesney , the Eagles , Sugarland , Taylor Swift and Kid Rock have already been guests.
