Lech Posen (officially: KKS Lech Poznań ) is a Polish football club from Poznań ( Polish: Poznań ). With seven Polish championships and five cup wins, Lech Posen is one of the most successful teams in Poland. The association, founded in 1922, is named after Lech , the legendary founder of Poland.

history

The association was founded on March 19, 1922 as Lutnia Dębiec in Dębiec ( German  Dembsen ), which today belongs to the city of Poznan.

It celebrated its greatest successes in the years from 1982 to 1993, in which the team became Polish champions five times and won the Polish Cup competition three times. In 2004, Poznan for the first time continued this successful period when they won the trophy for the fourth time. After the team merged with Amica Wronki in the summer of 2006 , Lech Posen was able to establish himself at the top of the Ekstraklasa for the first time . On May 19, 2009, the team succeeded after a 1-0 win against Ruch Chorzów in the Śląski Stadium, the fifth cup victory. After the 2008/09 season , Jacek Zieliński took over the legacy of Franciszek Smuda as head coach. Before the 2009/10 season, Zieliński was finally able to get his first title with Lech Posen after penalty shoot-out against Wisła Krakau with the Superpuchar Polski . After 17 years, the club, whose nickname is Kolejorz , was able to celebrate winning the Polish championship again and can thus qualify for the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League in the 2010/11 season. In 2015 he won the championship for the seventh time.

European Cup

The Poznaners' appearances were less successful in the UEFA Champions League (until 1991 European Cup Winners' Cup ) and in the European Cup Winners' Cup , in which Lech Poznan regularly failed at the latest in the second round. The bitterest end came for the team on November 9, 1988, when they were able to beat FC Barcelona , which ultimately also won the European Cup, a 1-1 draw for the second time and only failed 4-5 on penalties in front of a home crowd. In 2008 Lech Posen qualified again for the UEFA Europa League after a long absence and reached the group stage after the qualifying match against Chazar Lenkoran and the first round match against Austria Wien . There they met CSKA Moscow , Feyenoord Rotterdam , Deportivo La Coruña and AS Nancy and were able to move into the final of the last 32 teams as third in the group. The last stop was in the second round , when they were eliminated by Udinese Calcio and thus missed the second round.

After the championship in the Polish league in 2009/10, Lech Poznan took part in the qualification for the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League and met Azerbaijan's representative İnter Baku in the second round . There, after a penalty shootout, the third round could be reached, but where they failed to Sparta Prague (0: 1 and 0: 1). With a 0-1 away win and a goalless draw in front of a home crowd in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League play-offs against Ukrainian representative Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk , Lech Posen made it into the group stage of the Europa League . After leading the table after four matchdays with victories against FC Red Bull Salzburg and Manchester City , Lech Posen secured an early entry into the round of 32 with a 1-1 draw in their own stadium against Juventus Turin . There they were able to defeat Portuguese representatives Sporting Braga 1-0 in the first leg at their home stadium , but lost the second leg in Braga 2-0 and were eliminated from the tournament.

Stadion

Lech Poznan's home ground is the 42,837-seat Poznań Stadium . The stadium, built in 1980, was heavily expanded in 2010 for the 2012 UEFA European Championship . In the 2014/15 season , the average number of spectators in the Ekstraklasa was 20,054, with the top games against arch rivals Legia Warsaw with 41,545 and against Wisła Krakow with 41,556 spectators by far the most popular fans.
