Kappelen (German: Kappeln ) is a French commune with 587 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Mulhouse , the canton of Brunstatt and the municipality of Saint-Louis Agglomération .

The municipality of Kappelen is located in the Sundgau , about 15 kilometers northwest of Basel and 15 kilometers east of Altkirch .
Neighboring communities of Kappelen are Uffheim in the north, Brinckheim in the east, Michelbach-le-Bas in the south-east, Ranspach-le-Bas in the south, Helfrantzkirch in the south-west and Stetten in the north-west.
history
The name first appears in the 12th century. At that time the settlement belonged to the Landser rule, who had their seat in the village of the same name . Kappelen received its own parish in 1820.

Attractions
- The Old St. Michaels Church, formerly a chapel, was chosen to be the village church in 1847.
