Karşıyaka , KSK (completely: Karşıyaka Spor Kulübü ) is a Turkish sports club founded in 1912 in Izmir in the district of the same name .

Karşıyaka is a district of Izmir, which is located directly on the large bay of Izmir, but exactly opposite the central districts of Alsancak and Göztepe. Traditionally there has been a strong rivalry in football between Karşıyaka and the clubs in these districts, Göztepe Izmir and Altay Izmir . The club's volleyball department is also represented in the highest national leagues.

Soccer

Founding member of the Süper Lig and the following two decades

With its arch-rivals Göztepe Izmir and Altay Izmir , the football division is one of the most successful representatives of Izmir. With these he played for years for the championship of the İzmir Futbol Ligi , the city championship of Izmir. In the summer of 1959, the club was one of the founding members of the then newly created, for the first time supraregional top Turkish league, today's Süper Lig . After the club had played regularly in this league until the summer of 1964, it rose for the first time in its history in the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi . In the following years the club returned several times to the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , but was never able to establish itself in this long-term. In 1973 the club even rose to the Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi , the third highest Turkish league, but returned to the 2nd Futbol Ligi after eight years.

Return to the Süper Lig after 16 years of abstinence

After the club was promoted to the 2nd Futbol Ligi in the summer of 1980, he played several seasons in a row for promotion to the 1st Futbol Ligi. The club missed promotion to runner-up for five seasons in a row, but caused a sensation in the Turkish Cup in the first half of the 1980s when the club, as a second division, reached the semi-finals once ( 1983/84 and once the quarter-finals 1984/85 ) reached.

In the 1986/87 season , the club finally succeeded in the long-awaited second division championship and thus returned to the 1st Futbol Ligi after 16 years of abstinence. In this league, the club played with two seasons interruption for seven seasons until the summer of 1996.

Systemic relegation to the TFF 2nd Lig

After relegation to the 2nd Futbol Ligi, the club played the next five years in this league, played the last four of these seasons to achieve promotion without it.

Since Turkish professional football was to undergo fundamental changes in the 2001/02 season, preparations for this change were made in the 2000/01 season. So far, professional football in Turkey has consisted of three leagues: the top division, the single-lane Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the second-rate five-lane and two-stage Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi and the third-rate, eight -lane Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi . For the 2001/02 season, professional football was expanded to four professional leagues. While the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi remained unchanged, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi was now in the second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Aategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category A of Turkey ), and the third highest division , the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category B of Turkey ), divided. The subordinate Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi was henceforth the fourth highest division, the TFF 3rd Lig . Those teams, which only occupied a middle place in the table in the second division season 2000/01 , were assigned to the newly created third-highest Turkish division, the 2. Lig, for the coming season. Karşıyaka SK, which had finished the league in the respectable 3rd place in the table, had to relegate to the 2nd Lig due to the system.

2. Return to the TFF 1. Lig and the following years

After the system-related relegation to the TFF 2nd Lig, the club missed promotion in the first third division season in the play-off final with a 1: 2 defeat against Adana Demirspor . In the second third division season, the 2002/03 season , the club finished the league as champions and thus rose to the TFF 1. Lig after a two-year absence.

After returning to the TFF 1st Lig, the club played for twelve years with the declared goal of promotion, but mostly occupied table positions in the middle table segment.

Relegation to the TFF 2nd Lig despite large investments (2015-2016)

In 2015 Fatih Diniz , to whom the businessman and patron Erdal Acar pledged his financial support, was elected club president. This new club management invested heavily in the team before the 2015/16 season . With Necati Ateş , Gökhan Ünal , Engin Baytar and Çağlar Birinci, several former Turkish national players were signed to build a powerful team with a number of other seasoned first division players. As a coach, the club also hired Cüneyt Dumlupınar, the young and from Izmir reigning master coach of the TFF 1st Lig. This had sovereignly led Kayserispor to the championship in the previous second division season .

Despite these investments, the hoped-for success did not materialize. On the contrary, the club showed a disappointing performance and quickly slipped into the relegation positions. Further commitments in the winter break and several coach changes did not turn the relegation trend. Several weeks before the end of the season, the club was the first to be relegated and bottom of the table. The club experienced its most unsuccessful second division season in history this season.

In October 2016, the club received a two-year transfer ban from FIFA . The previous club management was able to avert penalties in the form of a transfer ban or a point deduction four times in a row. The reason for the transfer ban was the outstanding retainer or replacement of the former players Chikeluba Ofoedu , Ariza Makukula , Emmanuel Banahene , Kahê and Okan Şahingöz .

The men's basketball department, also known as Pınar Karşıyaka through sponsorship since 1998 , is one of the founding members of the top division Türkiye Basketbol Ligi and has been a permanent member of this league since 1974 after a six-year break. In 1987 they won the Turkish championship and the presidential cup, which is held as a Supercup between champions and cup winners .

Fans

The followers of Karşıyaka do not refer to themselves as residents of Izmir, but as residents of the Karşıyaka district and use the nickname "35.5" (Otuzbeşbuçuk) to distance themselves from the rest of Izmir and its license plate number 35.

The club's only fan group is called “Karşıyaka Çarşı” and represents the interests of all fans as a unit. In Europe, especially at the European matches of the club's basketball team, the organization “Karsiyaka Europe”, founded in Germany, organizes the appearance of the fans.

The fans affectionately call the club “Kaf Sin Kaf”. This name comes from the time before the founding of the state of modern Turkey . At that time the Arabic alphabet was still used. The club acronym KSK spelled in this alphabet results in: Kaf - Sin - Kaf .

Friendships and rivalries

There is an official friendship with the Fatih Karagümrük SK association . Furthermore, there is a sympathy towards teams like Orduspor , Trabzonspor and Fethiyespor .

There is a lot of rivalry with the Göztepe Izmir club . On May 18, 1981 there was in the derby against Göztepe with over 80,000 spectators a world record for the most visitors to a second division game. In general, the Izmir derby is considered to be one of the greatest in the world.
