Liebenswiller (German Liebensweiler , Alsatian Liebedswiller ) is a French commune with 194 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Mulhouse , the canton of Saint-Louis and the municipality of Saint-Louis Agglomération .

The community of Liebenswiller im Leimental is located on the Swiss border, about twelve kilometers southwest of Basel city ​​center.

history

There are early mentions from the years 829 as Theotberlouuilare, 1232 as Dieprechtswilr, 1341 as Diepretzwiller, 1489 as Diepretzwilr, 1567 as Liebentzweiler and 1576 under the current name. A Gallo-Roman settlement consisting of a farm and a villa is said to have existed between Leymen and Liebenswiller . During the First French Republic , officials were stationed in the village to block the route between the Mariastein monastery and the Sundgau . The village school was established in 1823. At the end of the 19th century there were 45 families or 187 residents in Liebenswiller, all of whom were Catholic. The municipality has been getting electricity from Switzerland since 1912, from Elektra Birseck . In 1913 the water pipes were laid. Today the village has almost 200 inhabitants.
