The Oberrimbacher sinkholes were the first nature reserve with geological features among the protected geotopes in the Main-Tauber district; The other protected objects are mostly natural monuments ; in addition, other objects are suggested as worthy of protection

Geological classification

The landscape of the district at the northern end of the administrative district of Stuttgart is built according to its north-west position in the south-west German layered landscape from rocks of the red sandstone , the shell limestone and the Lower Keuper . The shell limestone predominates over a large area. The following table provides information on the geological classification and structure of the geotopes in the Main-Tauber district according to geological features and geological formations (status: 2002, with 53 geotopes at that time):

Protected and worthy of protection geotopes

In the Main-Tauber district, 62 geotopes are currently officially designated by the State Office for Geology, Raw Materials and Mining (LGRB) as protected or worthy of protection. These include numerous extensive natural monuments and three nature reserves with geological features. In addition, more than 20 "new" geotopes are currently proposed as worthy of protection in order to expand the objects already under protection to 62 geotopes (as of June 20, 2020):
