List of Rectors of the University of Halle (Saale)

The list of rectors of the University of Halle (Saale) shows those responsible for the management of the rectorate from the founding of the University of Halle in 1694 to the present day. At the foundation of the University of Halle, the founder had reserved the right to take over the rectorate himself, or to transfer it to another princely or distinguished person as rector magnificentissimus . Accordingly, Friedrich Wilhelm (1694–1705), Philipp Wilhelm (1705–1711), Friedrich Wilhelm (1712–1715) and Margrave Karl (1715–1718) were appointed. The king then declared by decree of June 5, 1718 that it was unnecessary to appoint a rector magnificentissimus, whereupon this dignity was not restored. From the foundation until 1808, the official title of prorector was common for the serving rectors . In 1808 the Chancellor Niemeyer was appointed Rector perpetuus .

By decree of December 12, 1816 No. In 1197 it was allowed to hold the title of Vice Rector again. The same was changed, however, by the university statutes of April 24, 1854 § 5 to that of a rector . The term of office of a Vice-Rector lasted from July 12 of the year in office until he was handed over to the new Vice-Rector in the following year. From 1735 to 1742, the University of Halle had six-month prorectorates, which extend to the semester period from July 12 to January 12 as the back semester (hereinafter referred to as HS) and from January 12 to July 12 as the front semester (hereinafter referred to as VS) stretched.
