The 2018/19 Metal Ligaen season was the 62nd season since the founding of the top division in Danish ice hockey , which has been called Metal Ligaen since 2014 . The main round took place from September 14, 2018 to February 27, 2019. Due to financial problems, the Gentofte Stars were not given a license for this season. Thus the league was reduced to 10 teams. The defending champions are the Aalborg Pirates . For the first time, Rungsted Seier Capital became Danish champions, who beat SønderjyskE Ishockey in four games . Third place went to the Frederikshavn White Hawks in two games against last year's champions Aalborg Pirates.

On December 4, 2018, the Hvidovre Fighters announced that the board had decided to cease operations of the team with immediate effect.

In the main round , the ten clubs complete a triple round with 45 games per club. Due to the reduction to ten teams, the seven best teams in the main round qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The teams in places 8 and 9 play in the remaining two participants for the quarter-finals. In the first two playoff rounds, the teams may choose their playoff opponent in the order of their final placements, whereby the first placed may choose his opponent first. All play-off games from the quarter-finals to the final are played in the best-of-seven mode. There are three points for a win in regular time, two points for a win after overtime or a shootout and one point for a loss after overtime or a shootout.

Revised mode

As a result of the elimination of the Hvidovre Fighters, the results of all games were canceled and the games still to be played were canceled. However, they left the league in a situation where some teams would finish the season 21 home and 19 away while others would finish the season 19 home and 21 away. With this in mind, the Danish Ice Hockey Union, in cooperation with the League Association, decided to adjust the remaining game program by changing the home game into two games, so that all teams will end the season 20 home and 20 away games.

Playoffs

In the playoffs, the 8 best teams from the main round play against each other in the " Best of Seven " mode (with the exception of play-in and third-place play). The 4 best teams in the main round choose their opponent for the quarter-finals from the teams in places 5, 6, 7 and the winner of the play-in game, based on their ranking.
The playoffs will begin on February 26, 2019 with the play-in game between the Herlev Eagles and the Odense Bulldogs.

Play-in

The play-in games will be played in the " Best of Five " mode, with the Herlev Eagles leading 1-0 at the beginning of the series. The play-in games will take place on February 26th and March 1st and, if necessary, on March 3rd and 5th.
