wine growing

Vineyard in the Glottertal

The oldest written evidence of viticulture in Glottertal known today dates from around 1580 and mentions vines in connection with the former Winterbach Castle . Viticulture in Glottertal reached its peak in the second half of the 19th century. At that time there were not only vines on the Eichberg and Schlossberg, but almost every farmer had planted wine on his land, sometimes up to very high altitudes. There was even a vineyard at Wuspenhof at an altitude of 720 meters above sea level, which was unique in Germany. Towards the end of the 19th century, the advance of previously unknown vine diseases and pests such as downy mildew , oidium and phylloxera brought an abrupt end to the further expansion of viticulture in Glottertal. Harvest failures increased so that the area under vines soon declined again.

Towards the end of the 1950s, the area under cultivation leveled off at the current level of around 58  hectares . Even the vineyards that still exist today are up to 500  m above sea level. NN to the steepest and highest located in Germany. The slope of up to 70 degrees allows for optimal solar radiation, but on the other hand hardly allows any machine use at work. Ninety percent of the work in the Glottertal vineyards has to be done by hand to this day.

Grape varieties

The location Roter Bur on Eichberg, behind the church in Glottertal

In the past, to protect against total breakdowns caused by diseases and pests, it was common in Glottertal to cultivate several grape varieties on one piece of vine and to read and press them together. So were Pinot Blanc , Sylvaner , Chasselas , Elbling and Pinot Noir side by side represented. In the 1950s, with the establishment of a winegrowers' cooperative in 1951 and the subsequent creation of a vine development plan in 1958, the varietal structure changed noticeably. The grape varieties are currently distributed as follows: 80% Pinot Noir , 12% Pinot Gris , 5% Müller-Thurgau , 2% Gewürztraminer and 1% Riesling . Muscatel and Pinot Blanc are grown in small quantities , with the area of Pinot Blanc showing an upward trend.

"Roter Bur" and "Scheffelwein"

Wine and pasture management in Glottertal

The location and the legally protected name “Roter Bur” stand for particularly high-quality wines from the Glottertal. Around 1835 the Ohrensbach farmers began clearing the forest on the Eichberg and growing wine there. The name "Roter Bur" comes from the Rotburenhof on the other side of the valley, which owned the best parcels in the central location of the Eichberg, which are now owned by the wine cooperative. The location names in Glottertal are misleading: While the "Roter Bur" location is exclusively on the Eichberg, the "Eichberg" location describes all the other vineyards in the valley. Thanks to the low yields, the good microclimate, the optimal solar radiation and heat storage and, last but not least, the careful work of the winegrowers, top quality matures in the Roter Bur almost every year, which is sent nationwide to end consumers, restaurants, specialist and retailers.

The name “Scheffelwein” goes back to the poet Viktor von Scheffel , who stayed in Bad Dürrheim in 1881 for a cure and after enjoying a “red bour” at the Löwenwirt in Rietheim near Villingen, he was so impressed with the wine from Glottertal Poem honored:

God give all people a pursuit of truth
then the wine retains its authenticity and clarity,
God give the sunniest ray of sunlight
the flowers of the vines in Glottertal.

“Scheffelwein” is the name given to the earlier “old Glottertäler” as it was cultivated and expanded before 1971. At that time, vines were planted with around 60% Pinot Noir, 30% Ruländer and 10% Gewürztraminer. This practice had established itself to secure yields, as the old grapevine was not as reliable as today's plants. The grapes were picked and pressed together, which is what gave the Glottertal valley its special flavor. Today's "Scheffelwein" comes from the remains of these old vineyards and is matured in wooden barrels as it used to be.

Tourism is an important industry in Glottertal. In the almost 1000 beds, around 160,000 overnight stays are counted annually. The Glottertäler gastronomy has a good reputation in the region and attracts many townspeople from Freiburg and Emmendingen .

The Carlsbau in Glottertal offered mid-1980s, the backdrop for the successful television series "The Black Forest Hospital". The filming locations of the television series in the Black Forest , especially the Glottertal and the Carlsbau, became a popular destination for fan tourism. At that time the building was a health clinic of the State Insurance Institution of Württemberg . The building has been empty since 2004 and was sold in 2013 to Kur und Reha GmbH of the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband , which opened a psychosomatic acute clinic there in 2014.

The Hilzingermühle is considered to be the oldest mill in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district, it was built in 1621 by the then Hilzingerhof farmer Johann Hilzinger and has served as a flour mill for centuries.

Mining in the Glottertal

In the Middle Ages, lead mining - silver ores and iron ores - was of great importance . The name of a mine as Herzogenberg can be related to the Eichberg and creates a connection with the dukes of Zähringen , who very likely had mining rights here and died out in 1218. Historical and archaeological sources show that mining flourished in the second half of the 13th century. At that time one of the most important monuments in the history of technology, the Urgraben , was built, which was the first mechanical water lift to operate in Central Europe. The main mines were silver, zinc and iron . The Glottertal was one of the wealthy areas of the Black Forest. Mining was given up in the 14th century. Attempts in the early 16th century to revive the mining industry were unsuccessful.

There are still many traces of mining in the Glottertal today. There are numerous tunnel entrances and spoil heaps in the valley.

sport and freetime

In addition to hiking and cycling, the community offers football and tennis courts as well as a panoramic outdoor pool.
