El Salvador took part in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta for the sixth time in the Summer Olympics. The team consisted of eight athletes, six of whom were men and two women. They competed in five sports in ten competitions. On July 19, Vargas carried the flag of El Salvador during the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium.
