Sânandrei or Sînandrei [ 'sɨnandrei ] ( German Sanktandres or St.-Andres , Hungarian Szentandrás ) is a municipality in the Timiș County , in the Banat region , in southwest Romania .
The place is also known under the German names Sanktandreas or St.-Andreas .
location
Sânandrei is located 12 km north of the district capital Timișoara ( Timişoara ), has a connection to the national road DN 69 4 km further south via the county road DJ 692 and is on the railway line Timișoara – Arad .

history
Sânandrei is one of the oldest localities in Timiș County. The place was first mentioned in writing in 1230 under the name Sancto Andrea , but archaeological finds attest to the existence of a settlement as early as the Neolithic. The first Germans settled here in 1748, and the Roman Catholic Church was built in 1762, which was given its current form in 1811 after a few renovations. In 1766 the French settled in Sânandrei and in 1772 another 42 German families. In 1834 the Greek Orthodox Church was built.
On June 4, 1920, the Banat was divided into three parts as a result of the Treaty of Trianon . The largest, eastern part, to which Sanktandreas also belonged, fell to Romania. In 1923 the place was given the official name Sânandrei.
As a result of the Waffen-SS Agreement of May 12, 1943 between the Antonescu government and Hitler's Germany , all men of German origin who were conscripted into the German army. Before the end of the war, in January 1945, all ethnic German women between the ages of 18 and 30 and men between the ages of 16 and 45 were deported to the Soviet Union for reconstruction work . The Land Reform Act of March 23, 1945 , which provided for the expropriation of German farmers in Romania, deprived the rural population of their livelihoods.
Population development
- In 1910 Sânandrei had 5,175 inhabitants, including 565 Romanians , 196 Hungarians , 4,392 Germans and 22 members of other nationalities.
- In 2002, Sânandrei had 5,371 inhabitants, 5020 Romanians, 118 Hungarians, 131 Germans and 102 others.
- In 2011, 5717 people were registered in Sânandrei. 5014 of them were Romanians, 94 Hungarians, 64 Germans, 30 Ukrainians , 26 Roma , 12 Serbs and 477 did not provide any information about their ethnicity.

In the center around the church are the town hall, the school, the rectory, the kindergarten, a doctor's practice, a pharmacy, the police station and the post office. There are also several restaurants, shops and various handicraft businesses in the village.
