Sanmihaiu Roman also Sînmihaiu Român [ sɨnmi'haiu ro'mɨn ] ( German  Romanian-Saint Michael or Romanian Saint Michael , Hungarian Oláh-Szentmihály , Oláhszentmihály or Bega Szentmihály , Bégaszentmihály ) is a commune in Timiş County , in the region Banat , southwest Romania . The villages Sânmihaiu German ( Deutsch-Sankt-Michael , Deutschsanktmichael ) and Utvin are affiliated to the community.

Sânmihaiu Român is located in the center of Timiș County, 13.2 kilometers from the county capital Timișoara ( Timişoara ) and has an area of ​​88.5 square kilometers. The associated villages of Utvin and Sânmihaiu German are 3.2 kilometers and 4.9 kilometers, respectively, from the town hall. Sânmihaiu Român is located on the DJ 591 county road, which connects the town with Timișoara, and on the Timișoara- Cruceni railway line .

History and etymology

Sânmihaiu Român was first mentioned in 1327 in the papal tithe lists. The place "SentMihai" is recorded in Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli's records from the years 1690–1700. In the conscription of 1717 "St.Mihal" has 43 houses. On the Mercy map from 1723 "St. Mihall" is entered. "St. Michal" appears on a map from 1761. According to Morabinszky , "SânMihai" is a Wallachian village. According to Ján Vályi , "SânMihai" is located in Temes County and is owned by cameras. According to Fenyes Elek , Sînmihaiu Român is a Wallachisheas village with 12 Catholics and 2,258 Orthodox.

While it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary (1868-1919), Sânmihaiu Român was owned by the Temesch notary Bela Jeszenszky and was called "Romanszentmihaly" until 1911, then "Begaszentmihaly" until 1920. The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the triple division of the Banat , whereby Sânmihaiu Român fell to the Kingdom of Romania .

As a result of the Waffen-SS Agreement of May 12, 1943 between the Antonescu government and Hitler's Germany , all men of German origin who were conscripted into the German army. Before the end of the war, in January 1945, all ethnic German women between the ages of 18 and 30 and men between the ages of 16 and 45 were deported to the Soviet Union for reconstruction work . The Land Reform Act of March 23, 1945 , which provided for the expropriation of German farmers in Romania, deprived the rural population of their livelihoods.
