Darren Mallory Sharper (born November 3, 1975 in Richmond ) is a retired American football player for the Minnesota Vikings , Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints on the position of safety . In 2016 he was sentenced to eighteen years in prison for multiple rapes .

Career

After a promising career in college football , Sharper was drawn 60th in the 1997 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers . Sharper established himself as one of the best safetys in the NFL and reached Super Bowl XXXII , but the Packers surprisingly lost to the underdog Denver Broncos with 24:31. In 2000 he was chosen for the first of five times in the Pro Bowl game of the best NFL players before he was given up in 2004 to local rivals Minnesota Vikings . Again, Sharper was a achiever before being transferred to the New Orleans Saints in 2009 at the age of 34 . The veteran helped New Orleans to quarterback Drew Brees to win the Super Bowl XLIV against the Indianapolis Colts with 31:17. After having knee problems, Sharper tried several comebacks before retiring from his career. Sharper worked for the NFL Network as a commentator for several years until he was fired in 2014 for his pending criminal case.

Criminal trial

In 2014, Sharper was charged with drugging and subsequently raping several women ( Date Rape ). Sharper admitted his guilt on nine counts and was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2015.

Originally, the sentence was set for only nine years, but has now been doubled after a revision in 2016.

Sharper has an older brother named Jamie Sharper who was also active in the NFL.
