tATu ( Russian Тату ) was from Russia originating Pop - duo , consisting of the two singers Jelena Katina and Yulia Volkova . The duo, one of the well-known stars of modern Russian pop music, attracted media attention by deliberately breaking taboos, such as the obvious display of eroticism and their alleged lesbian relationship. Between 2002 and 2006 they were the first Russian interpreters to be successful outside the former Eastern Bloc since the collapse of the Soviet Union . In 2003 tATu represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Riga . The duo has sold over 27 million records in its career, making them the most successful group in Russian music history.

history

1999-2002: 200 Po Wstrechnoi

In 1999, the music producer Iwan Nikolajewitsch Schapovalov organized a casting in Moscow to find a suitable singer for his project. The then 14-year-old Katina was selected from the 500 applicants, and after the production of the first demo recordings, Schapovalov decided to form a duo. To this end, he chose Wolkowa, who was also 14 years old at the time, as the second singer. The image of the new duo was given: it should be Lolitas , with lesbian tendencies, who cause a stir because they sometimes undress during their concerts. The abbreviation "Тату" should stand for "Та любит Ту" (Ta ljubit Tu) , which means something like "One loves the other". The name had to be changed for the international music market as there was already an Australian group called Tatu . Therefore tATu was chosen as the new international name . At this early stage, the band's development process was limited to a few people. Jelena Vladimirovna Kiper , who previously worked as a television reporter for NTW , wrote the lyrics together with Valeri Poljenko, the Moscow DJ Sergio Galoyan composed the songs, and the businessman Boris Renski, who got money from a computer company, financed the project. Ivan Shapovalov acted as the group's manager, producer and video director, but also participated in the creative process such as writing the lyrics. In the summer of 2000, the project was on the brink of collapse because financier Boris Renski did not believe in a successful career for the duo. However, Schapovalov managed to persuade Renski to pay one last sum of money with which the music video for the first single could be produced.

In December 2000, the first single, " Я сошла с ума " ( Ja soschla s uma , in German "I've lost my mind"), was released and quickly gained great popularity in Russia. The music video accompanying the song picks up on the band's image and is about the love between two schoolgirls. On May 19, 2001, the band management and Universal Music Russia signed a record deal in which tATu committed to release three albums through the record label. Shortly thereafter, the second single, " Нас не догонят " ( Nas ne dogonjat - "They will not get us") was released, which was able to achieve good broadcasts on the radio and on the music channels of Russia and the former Eastern Bloc countries. In their home country Russia as well as in the Eastern European countries Poland , Bulgaria , Slovakia and the Czech Republic , the debut album " 200 По Встречной " ( 200 Po Wstretschnoi - "200 in the opposite direction") released on May 21 was a great success and rose in all five Countries at number one on the album charts. On June 2, 2001, tATu received the 100 Pound Hit Award for Ja soschla s uma from Hit FM radio station in the Moscow Kremlin . MTV Russia named the music video the best of the year. With " 30 минут " ( 30 minut - "30 minutes"), the duo's third single was released in autumn 2001.

The group went on tour in Russia, Belarus , Ukraine , the Baltic States , Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan , Kazakhstan , Israel and Germany and gave over 150 concerts in numerous cities in 2001. In January 2002 tATu received an award from the Russian section of the IFPI because their album was the most successful of the year with more than two million copies sold. In February 2002 an Extended Edition was published, which with "Клоуны" ( Klouny - "Clowns") contained a new song and was marketed just as well. On May 15, the duo received another award from the IFPI: As the first and to date (as of November 2019) only Eastern European interpreter, tATu managed to sell over a million copies of an album in Europe , for which the duo with the IFPI Platinum Europe Award was honored. On May 30, 2002 appeared " Простые движения " ( Prostyje dvischenija - "Simple Movements") and thus the last new release before tATu withdrew to the recording studio to record the English-language debut album.

2003-2004: 200 km / h in Wrong Lane

The schoolgirl reputation and the lesbian cliché were not only underpinned in her music video for All the Things She Said , in which Wolkowa and Katina can be seen in a deep embrace and clear positions, but also through their public appearances, in which the two singers often meet each other kissed demonstratively and intensely. The triumphal march of the “Pop Lolitas” was shaped by a musical heavyweight: Trevor Horn , the maker of Frankie Goes to Hollywood . Under his leadership, the tATu sound was completely revised, the texts translated into English and the product tailored to the European and US market.

Ivan Schapovalov , manager of the duo between 1999 and 2004, shaped the image of the “Lolita lesbians”.

At the end of 2002 the first single was released in English, and in early 2003 the originally Russian album was released in English under the title 200 km / h in the Wrong Lane . There are also two Russian songs on this CD. The songs "Робот" ( Robot - "Robot") and "Досчитай до ста" ( Dostschitai do sta - "Count to Hundred") are missing on the English CD. As in Russia before, the duo has now met with a wide response in Europe and the USA . The controversies surrounding tATu increased the singers' popularity and made the single All the Things She Said rise to number one in many European charts for weeks. The duo also achieved large sales figures in the USA, Canada and Japan .

In the course of an interview with BBC Radio 1 in April 2003, Julija Wolkowa said the following about the duo's “lesbian image”:

“We don't want to get people to follow our example because it's better. We are only showing that this is life and that our behavior is nothing strange. It's no wonder it's just life. We think everyone has a reason and everyone should decide for themselves what to do and what not. "

In 2003 tATu was Russia's candidate for the Eurovision Song Contest 2003 and achieved third place with the title “ Не верь, не бойся, не проси ” ( Ne wer, ne boisja, ne prossi - “Don't believe , don't be afraid, please don't”). In advance, it was puzzled whether the two singers would kiss during their performance. In this case, the ESC management announced that it would interrupt the live broadcast and record video material from the dress rehearsals. In addition, Volkova's participation in the Song Contest remained open until the end, as it was canceled at the dress rehearsal and was under medical treatment a few hours before the performance. As it turned out later, the reason for this was a cyst in her throat which prevented her from singing the high pitched head voices characteristic of her voice.

On November 14th, 2003 the tATu music DVD Screaming for More was released in Germany. This DVD contains English and Russian music videos of the singles that have been released up to that point, special reports with interviews (“behind the scenes”), a poster and two songs sung live. On December 1 and 2, 2003, tATu gave concerts in the Tokyo Dome in Japan, which were advertised as the prelude to a Show Me Love World Tour . The two concerts were each attended by around 25,000 people and although tATu rarely performed in front of such a large audience, media reports said that at least 35,000 visitors per concert would have been necessary to make the shows profitable. In 2004 the 13-part television series " tATu в Поднебесной " ( tATu w Podnebesnoi - "tATu under the sky") started, which the duo should show in everyday life and when recording the new album. In fact, Katina and Volkova could hardly be seen. Instead, their producer Shapovalov used the show to market themselves and other projects. This and disagreements about the musical development of tATu eventually led to the duo parting with Shapovalov. For the series, the album "Поднебесная № 1" was released with the tATu lettering on the cover. However, it only contains one song by the band ( "Белочка" - Belotschka , "Squirrel"), which in turn is just a demo recording by Katina.

The separation from manager Schapovalov led to the interruption of album recordings and the termination of another project. The cinema premiere of the Japanese anime film "tATu Paragate", which was planned for November 2004 , was canceled, and work on the project that had been ongoing since November 2003 was discontinued despite advertising measures (film posters, stands at anime conventions , merchandising items such as T-shirts and caps). For the 100-minute film, the producer Shin'ichirō Watanabe had a budget of 4.7 million US dollars available. Since only a few concept art were released, it is unclear how far the film production was in the twelve months of production. In January 2005 the official film homepage was switched off.

2005-2006: Dangerous and Moving

tATu at a performance in
Moscow in October 2005

The two artists worked for half a year in Los Angeles on their second album Dangerous and Moving . A Russian version of the album was also completed, which is called " Люди инвалиды " ( Ljudi Inwalidy , roughly translated: "Disabled people"). The duo explained in the press that the title - contrary to the assumption that it was a verbal attack on all disabled people - does not refer to physical disabilities, but to the mental and moral inadequacies of people. The albums deal with topics such as prostitution, rape and lust. On September 12, 2005, the music video for All About Us , the first single from the second album, was first seen on the music channels, on August 18, 2005 the uncensored version of the video was released. In this Wolkowa is beaten and strangled. The video ends with a shooting. These scenes have been censored in Germany and the USA. In the UK and Austria, however, the video may be broadcast uncensored.

In the spring of 2006, the two started an advertising tour through Asia and Europe to present their album Dangerous and Moving . Also in spring 2006, the Californian group Flipsyde covered tATus Lied Gomenasai . Flipsyde's song is called Happy Birthday and is addressed to a child who has been aborted. (“Gomenasai” is Japanese and translates as “sorry”, with the correct spelling being “gomen nasai”.) The piano part as well as Katina's and Wolkowa's vocals have been taken over in Happy Birthday .

tATus record company Universal / Interscope had hoped to sell at least three million copies of the album Dangerous and Moving worldwide . The actual sales figures, even taking into account the Russian-language version, remained far below expectations with around 1.6 million copies sold. The band management rejected a fundamental image change of the duo, which was required by the record label , which also provided for the future only to publish songs in English. After a mutual agreement and fulfillment of the 2001 contract between the management and the record company, tATu parted ways with the Universal / Interscope record company in August 2006 after five years of collaboration and eight million records sold. Instead, the own record label TA Music was founded. The group's following albums were released under this label.

2007-2008: Happy Smiles

Wolkowa and Katina in Moscow (2008)

The recordings for the album, which was released in April 2008, began in April 2007. The first demo recordings were completed in Düsseldorf. According to Wolkowa and Katina, the sound of the third work should be "lighter" and more danceable. The third album is also the intended soundtrack for the film. In addition to working on the third studio album in Los Angeles, the artists took breaks to pursue their work in Moscow. The album initially had the working title "Управление Отбросами" ( Uprawlenije Otbrossami - " Waste Management ") and was later renamed "Весёлые улыбки" ( Wesjolyje ulybki - "Funny smile") and sold internationally as Happy Smiles . The working title Waste Management was used in 2009 for the international version of the album. On November 28, 2007, MTV Russia broadcast the video for the first single " Белый плащик " ( Bely Plaschtschik - "White Robe") on the album for the first time, which caused another controversy: At the end of the video clip, the pregnant Julija Volkova was ordered by Katina shot. On May 14, 2008, the uncensored video of "Белый плащик" was released.

On June 5, 2008, the video for the second single "220" was published on YouTube. tATu has now released the third single (radio single) from the album " Весёлые улыбки " / Happy Smiles . On September 12th, 2008 the radio premiere was on Loveradio. The name is You and I , which is also the soundtrack of the film of the same name. However, the single was only released in Russia. On October 8, 2008, the new album "Весёлые улыбки" was officially presented, and from October 17, 2008 the album was available in the tatu.ru online shop. The first orderers received a set of postcards with the CD they had ordered, and the album was also personally signed by the singers. On October 21, 2008, the album was initially sold in Russia in the music retail chain Soyuz . On October 18, 2008, the fourth single " Снегопады " ( Snegopady - "Snowfall") from the new album " Весёлые улыбки " was played on the radio for the first time and on April 17, 2009 it officially premiered.

2009–2010: Waste Management

On March 21, 2009 it was announced on the official band homepage and the official MySpace page that tATu would no longer be operated as a “full-time project” and that Katina and Wolkowa would devote themselves to their own solo projects. An international release of Waste Management , the international version of the album "Весёлые улыбки" / Happy Smiles , took place on December 15, 2009, initially as a Russian version in the tatu.ru online shop and for download. The releases planned for this time in South America were postponed to January 25, 2010 in Brazil and February 1, 2010 in Chile and Argentina. The singles Snowfalls and White Robe were released on July 13, 2009 and November 10, 2009 and are the international versions of "Снегопады" ( Snegopady ) and "Белый плащик" ( Bely plaschtschik ) from the new album "Весёлые улыбки" .

The two albums Happy Smiles and Waste Management could neither build on previous successes nor penetrate the Russian or international music market. For the first time in the history of the band, both a newly released album and all of the singles released from it missed the charts worldwide. In the United States, only 1,000 copies of Waste Management were sold through January 2010 , up from 826,000 at 200 km / h in Wrong Lane (2002) and 93,000 by Dangerous and Moving (2005). Billboard.com described this rate as moderate. This failure was attributed both to the musical performance and to poor marketing.

2011: dissolution

A film was announced in October 2006 based on the novel tATu Comeback by the then Russian Duma deputy Alexei Mitrofanov ( LDPR ). Wolkowa and Katina play themselves in it. The English-language film is directed by Brit Roland Joffé . The main roles are Mischa Barton ( OC, California ) and 20-year-old Shantel VanSanten. The cast also includes Anton Yelchin ( Alpha Dog - Deadly Friendships ) and the Swedish model Helena Mattson. Filming locations were Los Angeles , Moscow ( Mosfilm ) and Yaroslavl . The film had its premiere under the title You and I on May 16, 2008 at the Cannes International Film Festival and should be released in March 2009 in the USA. In fact, the film hit Russian and Ukrainian cinemas on February 3, 2011. It was released in US cinemas on February 6, 2011. The Russia-wide box office earnings of only US $ 900,000 could not even begin to cover production costs of around US $ 20 million, which caused the film to be a big box office flop.

On March 25, 2011, a press release published on the band's homepage stated that the double album Waste Management Remixes , which was due to be released on March 29, would be the last release of the duo tATu in the near future. Katina and Wolkowa wanted to take care of their solo careers even more intensively. After the release of the remix album in April, the group finally separated. The proceeds from this last album were donated to help children with cancer.

2012–2013: joint appearances

To mark the tenth anniversary of the publication of 200 km / h in Wrong Lane , a "Gold Edition" of the album was released on November 12, 2012 on the Universal Music Russia label. The new edition of the duo's English-language debut album includes the previously unreleased song A Simple Motion and a new remix for All the Things She Said as well as a revised artwork and a poster. On December 11, 2012 Katina and Wolkowa's first joint live appearance in over three years, when the two singers appeared as tATu at the Romanian final edition of The Voice and performed their two hits All The Things She Said and All About Us . This was followed by further joint appearances in Kiev , St. Petersburg and Tokyo . TATu also shot a commercial for Snickers in Japan .

2014–2016: Appearance at the Winter Olympics and subsequent disputes

On the occasion of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , southern Russia , the two singers performed together again in front of a larger audience. In the Olympic Stadium in Sochi they presented their song Nas ne dogonjat as part of the opening ceremony . The piece also acted as a signature tune for the Russian participants when they entered the stadium. Against the background of the strict Russian legislation against homosexuals , various news outlets suspected that the participation of the lesbian duo had been faked by President Vladimir Putin for tactical reasons in order to legitimize the highly controversial attitude of the authorities towards same-sex partnerships abroad. Konstantin Ernst , director of the state television broadcaster Perwy kanal and producer of the opening ceremonies, emphasized that tATu was chosen because of its high level of awareness and the piece of music that was appropriate for the occasion. The song, the title of which can be translated as “They will not get us”, should be understood as the Russian team's motto not to let anyone catch up with them in the fight for the Olympic medals.

On February 14, 2014 Katina and Wolkowa presented the new tATu single "Любовь в каждом мгновении" ( Lyubow w kaschdom mgnowenii - "Love in every moment") during a concert in Moscow's Olimpijski . The song was created in collaboration with Russian rapper Ligalize and Canadian singer and songwriter Mike Tompkins and was the duo's first new single since Sparks in April 2010.

On February 17th, Jelena Katina surprisingly announced the end of tATu in a video message on YouTube , as she considered further collaboration or contact with her bandmate Julija Wolkowa to be impossible in the future. According to Katina, Volkova gave her an ultimatum in which Katina was to play a subordinate role in the further work of the tATu project. Otherwise she would be "replaced by another girl with curly red hair". On February 20, Julia Volkova posted a reply online on YouTube. After that, there would be no differences between her and Katina. There would be no “great reunion” for tATu, but they are working on “joint projects”. She also confirmed that tATu would make a music video for the new single Love (In Every Moment) .

In April 2014 the music video for Love (In Every Moment) was released, for which Jelena Katina and Julija Wolkowa shot their scenes separately. The song is part of the A Sight Of Cupid project, which includes several short films about love. The tATu singers also play in the short film Together Apart . In May 2014, the two singers presented the film at the Cannes International Film Festival at a safe distance from each other . Here Yulia Wolkowa announced in an interview with the Italian press that the film would be the last collaboration between the two.

Despite the ongoing disputes, the duo came together again on May 16, 2016 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Russian children's band Neposedy, of which both belonged before tATu. Jelena Katina sang the song All Around the World with the children and together with Julija Wolkowa Nas ne dogonjat .

Musical style

tATus music is shaped by style elements from the 1970s and 1980s, such as synthesizers and metal guitars. The music producer Martin Kierszenbaum and various music critics, such as Matt Cibula, stated that tATus music was reminiscent of ABBA . While their first album "200 По Встречной" can still be clearly attributed to the electro-pop and electronica favored in Eastern Europe , the English-language version is more interspersed with Western pop-rock and the use of guitars. The following albums Dangerous and Moving and "Люди инвалиды" again mainly contained electro pop songs, but the English version also contained a small number of semi-rock songs. Later, the duo tried to find a lighter and more danceable style with the albums "Весёлые Улыбки" and Waste Management . As a Russian band, tATu published most of the songs in a Russian-language and an English-language version, although the sound and melody of some show slight differences and the text sometimes has a completely different meaning.

The duo also changed in relation to the subject matter dealt with in the albums. While the lyrics of their albums "200 По Встречной" and 200 km / h in the Wrong Lane still deal with homosexuality , self-discovery and self-realization as well as the protest against existing notions of being in society, the corresponding follow-up albums deal with Dangerous and Moving and "Люди инвалиды" the moral decline of society that the duo had been accused of a few years earlier. However, there are significant differences between the individual songs. While with some the multiple repetition of the refrain with the addition of other shorter text passages and embedded in an energetic rhythm is in the foreground (an example of this is " Простые движения " ( Prostyje dvischenija - "Simple movements")), most of the other lyrics are very lyrical and profound held, quieter songs like "30 минут" or 30 Minutes also emotional.

Influence on the music world

To this day, tATu is the only Russian band that has achieved greater success beyond the old Soviet borders. In many countries, such as Great Britain and Australia, it was the first Russian music export to make it to the top of the charts. Although Russian artists such as the trance group PPK had a few hit parade placements in Western European countries at the beginning of the new millennium , tATu managed to extend their success to all major music markets and even compete with Western artists. In addition, tATu differed from other Eastern European performers in that the singers defined themselves not only through their music, but more than others through their image as a lesbian couple. In many countries, tATus albums are among the few Russian-language releases. In Russia the worldwide success of the duo was noted with pride, after the country only lost its foreign policy influence after the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union and had to contend with a severe economic and financial crisis at the turn of the millennium. The 2003 daily Kommersant headlined: “After the devil knows how long we have finally brought about a cultural phenomenon on a world scale”. In fact, the duo's successes are highlighted in Russian media to this day. In the period that followed, other Eastern European artists made it into the western music charts, such as O-Zone , Alsou and Timati . The huge rush of Eastern European and Russian artists on the Western music market, predicted by some music experts, did not materialize. TATu also failed to distinguish itself as a long-term successful band in the western music world.

In 2014, tATu was voted the Most Underrated Girl Group in a reader survey by Billboard Magazine .

criticism

tATu performing at the VIVA Comet concert in Poland (2008). At that time they accepted the music award for their life's work.

Various appearances and the public representation of the group, such as the holding of concerts in underwear and the use of swear words in interviews, were sometimes heavily criticized at home and abroad.

After their first music video appeared on the western music market, the two singers moved into the focus of foreign music critics. The music magazine Billboard wrote in January 2003: “ All the Things She Said - a song full of power, longing and melancholy, with a wonderful, powerful sound. Young and unusual ... a resounding and promising debut. ”Journalists from the New Musical Express stated that the mixture of good production and scandalous demeanor was responsible for the high sales of tATu's CDs.

In the UK, a number of critics took offense at the young age of the two singers. Some public figures advocated a ban on broadcasting the video for All the Things She Said and accused tATu of “promoting pedophilia ”. British television presenter and columnist Richard Madeley called the duet “disgusting” and described the video for All the Things She Said as “a dream for all British pedophiles”. Michelle Elliott, founder and chair of the child protection group Kidscape, said: “Child pornography is not funny and shouldn't be joked about. I am very sad that this song was number one. ”The UK's two largest television channels have banned the music video from being broadcast on their programs. Nick Cowen of the Daily Telegraph, on the other hand, wrote: “All this excitement distracts from their music, which is not bad. It is more level than you might think. Even if the first synthetic soul sound is still primitive, you will soon be surprised by roaring guitars and a hard rock rhythm. "

In 2006, Igor Ignatov from the All-Russian Society of Disabled People was outraged by the song " Люди инвалиды " ( Ljudi Inwalidy , Eng . "Disabled People") from the album of the same name. The reason for this was, in addition to the title, a line of text in the song: "Nobody waits for the lost / Nobody wants the sad / These people don't live / They are drowned like kittens". A wheelchair user also appears in the music video broadcast. Katina and Wolkowa felt they had been misunderstood and said that their song was alluding to immoral, mentally disabled people and not to people with physical disabilities. Leonid Wokuijew, in his capacity as human rights commissioner for the Komi Republic, announced that he would take legal action against tATu. However, there was never a lawsuit as a result.

Others

In the run-up to the Iraq war , Katina and Wolkowa wore a T-shirt with the Cyrillic imprint “ ХУЙ ВОЙНЕ!When they appeared on the American television program The Tonight Show . " (CHUJ WOJNE!) , Which in German means" Fick the war! " The next time they appeared on a talk show in the US, they were banned from wearing these shirts. Thereupon they wore T-shirts with the inscription "CENSORED" (Eng. Censored ).

tATu supported the Moscow Pride gay and lesbian parade and spoke out for the rights of homosexuals in Russia.
