The TFF 2. Lig 2008/09 was the 38th season of the third highest Turkish division in professional men's football. It started on August 31, 2008 with the first day of the qualifying round and ended on May 31, 2009 with the playoff final. With this season the third highest Turkish division, which was called Lig B last season , was renamed TFF 2. Lig.

Competition mode

In the 2008/09 season, the third-highest division was essentially played in three stages, as in the previous season . In the 1st stage, the league was played in a qualifying round (Turkish Kademe Grupları ) in five groups with ten or eleven teams each with home and away games. After the end of the 1st stage, the first two teams from all groups were included in a joint group, the promotion round (Turkish Yükselme Grubu ), and played here for promotion to the TFF 1st Lig . The remaining teams in the five groups of the qualifying round played in an unchanged group constellation now in a relegation round (Turkish Düşme Grupları ) against relegation to the TFF 3rd Lig . Both the promotion round and the relegation round represented the 2nd stage and were played with two legs. The teams in the first two places in the promotion round rose directly to the TFF 1st Lig and the last three teams in all groups in the relegation round relegated to the TFF 3rd Lig . While the points from the qualifying round were not taken into the promotion round, they were counted unchanged in the relegation round. The 3rd stage was again carried out in the form of a play-off round with eight teams. The teams ranked from three to five and all the promotion round group winners of all descent groups should in the knockout system play out the third and final intermediates. The playoffs were held at the end of the group stage in a city that was neutral for all eight teams. In contrast to the previous season , four of the five qualifying or relegation groups were played with one team more. As a result, the total number of teams rose from 50 to 54. In addition, the last two teams of all relegation groups were not relegated, as in the previous season, but this time the last three teams of all relegation groups.

Beginning of the season had to the remaining of the previous season 37 teams the three relegated from the TFF 1. Lig Elazığspor , İstanbulspor , Mardinspor , the 14 newcomers Körfez Belediyespor , darıca gençlerbirliği , Beylerbeyi SK , Denizli Belediyespor , akhisar belediyespor , Altınordu Izmir , Beykozspor , Konya Şekerspor , Tokatspor , Çorumspor , Ofspor , Karsspor , Belediye Vanspor , Malatya Belediyespor have been added. The newcomers were promoted from the TFF 3rd Lig.

The season ended Bucaspor as champions and thus managed to participate in the second highest Turkish league again after nine years of abstinence. The 2nd place in the table occupied Mersin İdman Yurdu and thus achieved participation in the TFF 1st Lig after four years . The play-offs were held as a neutral city in Ankara and played under the teams Tokatspor , Tarsus İdman Yurdu , Çorumspor , Dardanelspor , Denizli Belediyespor , Konya Şekerspor , Trabzon Karadenizspor and Şanlıurfaspor . In the play-off final, Dardanelspor prevailed 5-0 against Tarsus İdman Yurdu and thus achieved the first ascent in the club's history to the second-highest Turkish league. Relegated were end of the season Gaziosmanpaşaspor , darıca gençlerbirliği , Beylerbeyi SK ( Group 1 ), Altınordu Izmir , Marmaris Belediye Gençlikspor , Afyonkarahisarspor ( Group 2 ), MKE Kirikkalespor , Maltepespor , Alibeyköy SK ( Group 3 ), Pazarspor , Arsinspor , Yimpas Yozgatspor ( group 4 ) and Gaskispor , Şanlıurfa Belediyespor , Malatya Belediyespor ( Group 5 ).

At the start of the season, several teams changed their names. So Yeni Kırşehirspor called himself from then on Kırşehirspor . In addition, the district town club Değirmenderespor was bought by first division side Trabzonspor and renamed Trabzon Karadenizspor as its second team .
