The Beatles' Second Album ( English The second Beatles album ) is the third album released in the US by the British band The Beatles . It was released on April 10, 1964. It is the second Beatles album to be distributed by Capitol Records .
Emergence
On January 10, 1964, the album Introducing… The Beatles by Vee-Jay Records was released in the USA , ten days later the album Meet the Beatles! . On April 10, 1964, the third album, The Beatles' Second Album , followed, which Capitol Records saw as the second album by the Beatles.
The album contains the remaining five songs from the British album With the Beatles , two songs from the EP Long Tall Sally ( Long Tall Sally and I Call Your Name) , the single She Loves You / I'll Get You (released by Swan Records) as well as the two single B-sides: Thank You Girl (single A-side: From Me to You , published by Vee-Jay Records ) and You Can't Do That (single A-side: Can't Buy Me Love ).
During the preparations for the album, Capitol Records was involved in various legal disputes with Vee-Jay Records, so that Capitol decided not to use songs from the album Introducing ... The Beatles . Nevertheless, the title Thank You Girl was used for the album The Beatles' Second Album , for which Capitol Records had to acquire a license. Swan Records only had the right to sell the songs She Loves You / I'll Get You as a single, so Capitol Records was able to use the number one single for the album. The two songs Long Tall Sally and I Call Your Name were only available in the UK on June 19, 1964.
From The Beatles' Second Album , Capitol Records began to publish only eleven songs on their Beatles compilation albums instead of twelve in order to save license fees. This release policy was repeated with the albums Something New , Beatles '65 , Beatles VI , Yesterday and Today and Magical Mystery Tour .
The Beatles 'Second Album became the Beatles' second number one album in the United States. It stayed at this position on the chart for five weeks. On May 2, 1964, the Beatles ranked 4th (Introducing… The Beatles) , 2nd (Meet the Beatles!) And 1st (The Beatles' Second Album) on the US Billboard 200 . In January 1997 the album went double-platinum in the US for two million copies.
The album was released in a mono and a stereo version. The mono version of the album is essentially the downmixed British stereo version. For the song You Can't Do That , George Martin made a mono mix for US releases. Early mono and stereo mixdowns were used for Long Tall Sally and I Call Your Name . In the reworked stereo version of the album, no stereo mixes of the songs She Loves You and I'll Get You were used, but so-called duophonic mixes (fake stereo).
The album The Beatles' Second Album was also in Colombia and Canada published.
The long-playing record was produced with a completely different cover design for American and British military personnel stationed in Germany (release: July 13, 1964, catalog number: Odeon ZTOX 5558) and reached number 50 on the German album hit parade.
In the UK, the album was made for export in early 1965 (catalog number: CPCS-102).
Cover design
The twelve cover photos for The Beatles' Second Album are by Joe Covello. They were created in February 1964 ( Ed Sullivan show, press conference at Kennedy Airport, concert at Washington Coliseum), when the Beatles were doing a promotional tour through the USA. The designer of the cover is George Osaki.
