The Geo-Naturpark Bergstrasse-Odenwald is 3800 km² between the rivers Rhine , Main and Neckar . In the south it partially overlaps with the Neckartal-Odenwald nature park in Baden-Württemberg. In the east it meets on the Main with the Bavarian Spessart Nature Park .
Awarded as a Geopark
As Geopark Bergstrasse-Odenwald, the Geo-Naturpark has been a member of the Global Geoparks Network and the European Geoparks Network since 2004 . UNESCO defines three overarching goals for a geopark: preservation of the intact environment, impulses for sustainable economic development and geoscientific knowledge transfer. Within the Geopark there are also the UNESCO World Heritage sites Messel Pit (World Natural Heritage) and Lorsch Monastery (World Heritage).
Before that, in 2002, the Geopark Bergstrasse-Odenwald (together with the Geopark Harz - Braunschweiger Land - Ostfalen , the Geopark Mecklenburg Ice Age Landscape and the Geopark Swabian Alb ) had been declared a National GeoPark when National GeoParks were first certified in Germany .
Geographical location
The nature park is located in the Odenwald
- in the south of the state of Hesse in the districts of Bergstrasse , Darmstadt , Darmstadt-Dieburg , Groß-Gerau and Odenwaldkreis ,
- in the north of Bavaria in the district of Miltenberg and district of Aschaffenburg ,
- in the north of Baden-Württemberg in the districts of Rhein-Neckar-Kreis , Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis and Main-Tauber-Kreis .
The nature park includes the Hessian Ried and the Bergstrasse in the west , the wooded low mountain range of the Crystalline Odenwald and the Buntsandstein-Odenwald to the Main Valley in the east. In the north the nature park extends into the Messel hill country and to the south as far as the Neckar valley .

The support of the Natural Park is the geo-Bergstraße-Odenwald eV , the 2008 through the merger of the company founded in 1960 Bergstraße-Odenwald eV and the Geopark Bergstraße-Odenwald eV emerged.
Protected areas
The south-eastern part of the nature park is designated as a landscape protection area LSG within the nature park Bayerischer Odenwald (formerly protection zone) (LSG-00562.01, WDPA: 396112).
