The Valletta Football Club is a Maltese football club based in Valletta , capital of Malta.

history

Valletta United was founded on January 9, 1904 . The club became champions for the first time in the 1914/15 season. After only the runner-up in 1928, the club celebrated its second title win in 1932. In the same year it was renamed Valletta City , which should last seven years. In 1939 the club was renamed Valletta St. Paul's AFT . Since the game had come to a standstill during the Second World War , the club merged in 1944 with local rivals Valletta Prestons to form Valletta FC

The newly founded club was successful in its first season and won the Maltese championship, which could be defended the following year. In the years that followed, Valletta FC, along with Sliema Wanderers , Floriana FC and Hibernians Paola, were among the dominant teams in the Maltese championship. But the club was also successful in the Maltese Cup: Since winning the title for the first time with a 3-0 final victory against FC Floriana in 1960, ten more titles have followed.

Since 2001, when the club won the double, one had to wait for a title before the championship was secured two game days before the end in May 2008 when Marsaxlokk could not win against Birkirkara .

The current supplier of Valletta FC is Nike , the main sponsor is Insignia, a lifestyle management company.

Stations in the European Cup

With a total of 39 appearances in the European Cup, Valletta FC was able to prevail eight times against an opposing team; more often than any other club in the island state. The "Citizens" started in 1999 against Barry Town (0-0 and 3-2), then they threw the Keflavík ÍF (3-0 and 2-2 in 2009), Tre Fiori (3-0 and 2-1 in 2011 ), Lusitanos (8: 0 and 1: 0 2012), La Fiorita (3: 0 and 1: 0 2013), B36 Tórshavn (1: 0 and 1: 2 2016), SS Folgore / Falciano (2: 0 and 1 : 0 2018) and F91 Dudelange (2: 2 and 1: 1 2019) from the respective competition.

The 8-0 victory against Andorran champions FC Lusitanos in the first qualifying round for the Champions League 2012/13 is not only by far the highest victory for Valletta FC, but also for a Maltese club team in the European Cup. The biggest defeat was the 0:10 at Glasgow Rangers in the first round of the European Cup Winners 'Cup 1983/84, after the first leg was already lost 8-0, making the overall result of 0:18 the worst in the Citizens' European Cup history is. Seven years later, Valletta met the Glasgow Rangers again in the 1990/91 European Cup and lost again significantly, although this time "only" with an overall result of 0:10. Valletta FC suffered further double-digit overall defeats against Grasshopper Zurich (3:13 in 1978) and Honvéd Budapest (0:11 in 1980).

Other big names that Valletta FC faced in a European competition include Inter Milan (1972), Dynamo Moscow (1977), Leeds United (1979), Juventus Turin (1987), FC Porto (1991) and the three Viennese clubs FK Austria (1984), First Vienna FC (1989) and SK Rapid (1999).

The Citizens ' most memorable European Cup match took place on August 24, 2000 at the Ta' Qali Stadium against Croatian representative HNK Rijeka. After the HNK had won the first leg 3-2 in front of their own audience, they were behind in the second leg with the same result, so that extra time was necessary. Already in the 94th minute, Goran Brajković's goal to make it 3: 3 brought the HNK onto the road to victory, because Valletta FC would have needed a win with two goals to advance due to the away goals rule . Karl Bonnici's own goal to 3: 4 from the hosts' point of view in the 103rd minute ensured the final preliminary decision in favor of the Croats, which was not changed by David Carabott's equalizer in the 107th minute to 4: 4. The last goal to make it 4-5 was scored by Admir Hasančić in the 119th minute.
