Villard is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Villard is located at 806  m , about 23 kilometers east of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends slightly higher on the eastern edge of the valley in the Vallée Verte, at the western foot of the Pointe de Miribel, in the north-western Savoy Alps .

The 7.42 km² municipal area covers the central section of the Vallée Verte. The north-western border runs along the Menoge , which drains the valley to the southwest to the Arve . The Menoge has a flat valley floor about 300 to 500 m wide. From the course of the river, the municipality extends east over the adjacent forest slopes and mountain pastures to the Plaine Joux plateau and to the Pointe de Miribel , on which the highest point of Villard is reached at 1581  m .

Various hamlet settlements belong to Villard, including Sèchemouille ( 781  m ) and La Gruaz ( 792  m ) in the valley floor as well as Le Bourgeau ( 845  m ) and Les Crosats ( 934  m ) on the slope above the village. Neighboring municipalities of Villard are Burdignin and Habère-Lullin in the north, Mégevette and Onnion in the east, Bogève in the south and Boëge in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages , Villard belonged to the territory of the Lords of Faucigny. With the canton of Boëge, the village moved from the arrondissement of Bonneville to the arrondissement of Thonon-les-Bains in 1939 .

Since the beginning of the 1980s, thanks to the beautiful residential area, there has been a continuous strong growth in the number of residents. Numerous single-family houses were built outside the old town center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Villard is still a predominantly agricultural village today. There are also various local small businesses. Some workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Geneva-Annemasse area.

The village is located on the connecting road that leads from Thonon-les-Bains over the Col de Cou to Fillinges in the Arve Valley. Further road connections exist with Burdignin and Viuz-en-Sallaz.
