The Wolfsberger Athletiksport Club (officially RZ Pellets Wolfsberger Athletiksport Club through sponsorship ), known as Wolfsberger AC or just WAC , is a football club from the city of Wolfsberg in Carinthia . The club has 20 seasons in the second highest Austrian league. Through a cooperation with the SK St. Andrä , the club entered from 2007 to 2012 under the name Wolfsberger AC / St. Andrä in the first division and has been playing in the Bundesliga , the top division of Austrian football, since the 2012/13 season .

history

Wolfsberger AC (usually referred to as WAC for short ) was founded in 1931 by Adolf Ptazcowsky, Karl Weber, Hermann Maierhofer, Franz Hafner and Michael Schlacher. After a hull championship in the spring of 1946 he had the authority in the from 8 September began its first full post-season in the group consisting of only one group the first class that virtually the former for two game years Carinthian State League posed to participate, but had already go down again after a year without gaining points.

Promotion to regional Tauern League

In 1952, meanwhile the structure of the leagues and classes had been changed or expanded (among other things, there was the Tauern League from 1949/50 , which was practically the second highest league in Austria at regional level), the return as title holder of the 1st class B and already succeeded In 1955, the Wolfsberger finished the league in second place. This was equivalent to participating in the relegation to the Tauern League. Thanks to victories of 4: 3 and 3: 2 against SV St. Veit / Glan , the promotion succeeded. From 1956/57 the Tauern League was played in a north group (with Salzburg) and a south group (with the Carinthian clubs). In the South Group, the WAC had fought for first place in the championship with the "Magnesite" from the WSG Radenthein in 1956/57 , but came second with four points behind. Only a year later, he was relegated to the regional league.

Establishment in the national league

After the Wolfsberger AC had not played a significant role in the regional league for a long time, a new upswing came under the head of the section, Hugo Reinprecht . Finally in 1968 the first place and thus the promotion to the regional league middle , which had been installed since 1959/60 , which at that time had replaced the Tauern league and now represented the regional group of the second highest Austrian league. The black and whites soon became the main inventory of the second tier and - after the three regional leagues were replaced by the new single-track national league (from 1973/74 to 1974/75) - they were also able to qualify as runner-up in 1973/74. The descent in the ninth second division year in series 1976/77 could be cushioned with the immediate resurgence and superior win of the state league with only two defeats. In the subsequent promotion games, the WAC prevailed against FC Union Wels and Red Star Knittelfeld .

In the 2nd Division, as the National League was now called, the Wolfsbergers stayed for another seven years, even if they did not play for promotion, before the second relegation took place in 1984/85 . Twice managed the wolves even as Carinthia's national champion in the 2nd Division return (both times in the relegation against the Styrian champion TSV Hartberg and the Upper Austrian champions SV Ried ), but this proved to be both 1988/89 and 1990/91 than to strong.

Relegation and cooperation

In 1994 the association became a founding member of the new Regionalliga Mitte as the third level. In the early years, the WAC mostly found itself in the promotion race, but ultimately had to relegate in 2002. The return did not succeed in the following seasons. In the 2003/04 season, the WAC even had to relegate to the minor league, from which - meanwhile already with the designation WAC / St. Andrä equipped - as second in the 2005/06 season was promoted back to the national league.

In 2007 a cooperation with the neighbor SK St. Andrä was decided. The two clubs then worked closely together, but remained formally independent: "Central areas of both clubs such as administration, administration, business, marketing, gastronomy as well as the sporting area as the heart (combat teams and youth center) are centrally managed by the also newly created office of the WAC / St. Andrä managed from Wolfsberg. “The WAC / St. Andrä first appeared in the third division regional league middle, and after promotion in 2010 in the first division.

Promotion to the Bundesliga

In the 2011/12 season, the WAC was champions of the first division with one round to go and made it to the Bundesliga . At the same time, the cooperation with SK St. Andrä was ended. Thus, the club appeared in the Bundesliga from that time on as Wolfsberger AC , for the years before the merger with St. Andrä the name WAC old was chosen.

In its first Bundesliga season in 2012/13 , the WAC narrowly missed fourth place, which would have allowed them to qualify for the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League. The last game against Wacker Innsbruck was lost 2: 3 after a 2-0 lead, so that the promoted team finished 5th in the end. The great sporting successes drew attention to the successful coach: Nenad Bjelica was unstoppable and switched to FK Austria Wien after the season . The previous assistant coach Slobodan Grubor became the new coach .

After only two points were achieved in the first seven games in the 2013/14 season , and the WAC was in last place in the table, Dietmar Kühbauer was hired as the new coach. Under his sporting direction, the team finally managed to finish this season with a secure seventh place. The 2014/15 season started with a surprise, because after the eighth game of the season, Wolfsberger AC took over the top of the table and was the first Carinthian soccer team to take the position of leader of the Bundesliga. After the 36th matchday, the WAC was in 5th place in the table. With a total of 52 points, the best result in the club's history was achieved.

Between Europe and relegation battle

The third place in the UEFA Europa League became available through the cup victory of champion Red Bull Salzburg (qualified for the UEFA Champions League ) . As a result, the WAC moved up and started in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League, where they defeated the Belarusian team of FK Shakhtsjor Salihorsk twice (1-0 and 2-0) and were able to reach the third qualifying round. In this Wolfsberg met the eight-time German champions Borussia Dortmund . The first leg was lost in Klagenfurt with 0: 1, the second leg in Dortmund 0: 5. After the 16th round, when you were bottom of the table, coach Kühbauer was dismissed and replaced by Heimo Pfeifenberger , with whom the 6th place in the table was reached. The 2016/17 season was completed satisfactorily for a long time, for a long time the WAC seemed to have nothing to do with relegation. However, in the last phase of the championship, increases in points became increasingly rare, before the league was managed on their own in the penultimate round with a 1-1 draw at SKN St. Pölten .

The 2017/18 season was unsuccessful for the WAC. Between the 6th round and the 22nd round you couldn't win a single game in the Bundesliga. After 5 defeats in a row and a 1: 5 at Rapid in the 27th round, coach Pfeifenberger was dismissed. The previous assistant coach Robert Ibertsberger took over on an interim basis until the end of the season. In the 33rd round, 9th place and thus relegation was fixed with a 1-0 victory at St. Pölten. After the season Christian Ilzer , who had previously been promoted to the Bundesliga with TSV Hartberg , became the new head coach.

With the best season in the club's history for the first time in the Europa League

They finished 3rd in the 2018/19 season, qualifying for the group stage of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League. The new head coach is Gerhard Struber after Ilzer left the WAC for Austria Vienna . The first game in the Europa League was won 4-0 away at Borussia Mönchengladbach on September 19, 2019 . Two weeks later they achieved a 1-1 draw against AS Roma in the home game, with the WAC's home games being played in the Merkur Arena in Graz , as the Lavanttal Arena in Wolfsberg did not meet the UEFA licenses and the Klagenfurt Wörthersee Stadium due to an art campaign is not recordable. This was followed by two defeats against the Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir . After a narrow 0-1 home defeat against Mönchengladbach, the Carinthians had no chance of promotion. With a 2-2 in Rome, the Wolfsbergers said goodbye to the European Cup.
