The Miz and The Miztourage versus the Hardy Boyz and Jason Jordan

The Miz (April 2016)

On the May 29, 2017 Raw episode, Raw commentator Corey Graves received a message on his smartphone that concerned Raw General Manager Kurt Angle and believed that it could ruin him. Over a period of several weeks, Angle and Graves received similar messages on the same subject.

Graves confronted Angle with questions about it on the July 10, 2017 Raw episode. Angle indicated that he would make the events public for the next week, but that it could both lose his family and destroy his career in the WWE Universe. Graves was confident that the entire WWE Universe and all wrestlers were behind him. Later, on the smartphone, Angle invited an unknown person to the next week's Raw edition to discuss the problems and make the issue public.

In this raw sequence Angle revealed that Jason Jordan of American Alpha his illegitimate son was ( kayfabe ) and now have a contract with Raw. As a result, the American Alpha tag team was torn apart and disbanded, as both were previously under contract with SmackDown.

Jordan defeated Curt Hawkins in his debut match on Raw the following week . As a guest on Miz TV , the Intercontinental Champion The Miz Jordan tried to win a member of his Miztourage ( Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas ), but Jordan rejected the offer, saying that he didn't need any help because the Raw General Manager was his father . Jordan added that he did not accept preferential treatment, and The Miz countered some blasphemous comments about Angle. When The Miz tried to strike against Jordan, the latter ducked and used a suplex against The Miz on the Miz tourage.

Jordan defeated The Miz on the August 14, 2017 Raw episode by disqualification, as the Miztourage intervened in favor of The Miz. The Hardy Boyz ( Jeff and Matt Hardy ) ran into the ring to protect Jason Jordan from the Miztourage. Later that evening, the Hardy Boyz and Jordan won a six-man tag team match against The Miz and The Miztourage. WWE announced on August 17, 2017 that The Miz and The Miztourage would face the Hardy Boyz and Jordan in a rematch on the Kickoff Show at SummerSlam.

Akira Tozawa versus Neville

Neville defeated Akira Tozawa in Great Balls of Fire and remained WWE Cruiserweight Champion . On the next Raw episode, Tozawa teamed up with Cedric Alexander and beat Neville and Noam Dar . The following evening at WWE 205 Live, the WWE cruiserweight roster, Tozawa began a feud with Ariya Daivari , but no winner could be identified.

In the following week on Raw there was a rematch between the two that Daivari won, because Tozawa's manager Titus O'Neil gave up the match at Tozawa's request. In the next 205 live edition, the two held another rematch that Tozawa won. Thereupon he was attacked again by Daivari.

Charly Caruso had an interview with Tozawa in the following issue of Raw in which he challenged Daivari to another rematch, but O'Neil canceled the match. Later, when Tozawa was on his way into the ring, he was attacked by Neville. Daivari then came in and attacked both Tozawa and Neville. Neville was defeated by counting out on the next 205 live episode of Daivari.

In the next Raw episode, a match between Tozawa and Daivari was scheduled for the next 205 live edition. The winner would be the number 1 challenger to the Cruiserweight Championship against Neville at SummerSlam. Tozawa defeated Daivari and was declared the number 1 challenger.

Akira Tozawa got the title chance in the Raw episode on August 14, 2017 in a match against Neville, which he also won. As a result, the title match was set as the rematch at SummerSlam and Neville challenged the cruiserweight champion Tozawa. Two days later, the match was scheduled for the kickoff show.

The New Day versus The Usos

The Usos (September 2014)

In Battleground won Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods of The New Day against The Usos , the tag team of Jey and Jimmy Uso , and thus won the Smackdown Tag Team Championship . When The New Day wanted to celebrate their championship in the following edition of SmackDown, they were attacked by The Usos. The next week, The Usos demanded a rematch for the title from The New Day, after which a match for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship at SummerSlam was set.

After The Usos won the match against Tye Dillinger and Sami Zayn in the following issue of SmackDown , Big E caught the Usos' attention so they could attack Kingston and Woods from behind. In the final SmackDown episode before SummerSlam, SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan fixed the match between The Usos and Big E and Woods from The New Day. The Usos then demanded a match against Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods that evening in retaliation for what had happened last week. Bryan fixed the match and The Usos were able to pinfall the match against Kingston. On August 16, 2017, WWE announced that the match would take place on the SummerSlam kickoff show.

Baron Corbin versus John Cena

In the July 25, 2017 episode of SmackDown, Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Mr. Money in the Bank Baron Corbin . After Nakamura's win over John Cena on August 1, 2017, Corbin attacked Nakamura from behind on WWE Network. Cena came to his aid and used an attitude adjustment against Corbin on the commentary table.

SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan scheduled a match between Baron Corbin and John Cena at SummerSlam the following week. In the last SmackDown episode before SummerSlam, Corbin attacked Cena during his non-title match against Jinder Mahal , resulting in a disqualification of Jinder Mahal. Then Corbin redeemed his Money in the Bank contract, but attacked after the start of the match Cena on the edge of the mat, whereupon Mahal Corbin rolled up and won.

Naomi versus Natalya

Natalya (March 2015)

In the SmackDown episode of July 11, 2017, SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon scheduled a fatal five-way eliminator for Battleground. The contestants were Charlotte Flair , Becky Lynch , Natalya , Lana and Tamina . The winner should get a title match on the SmackDown Women's Championship against Naomi at SummerSlam. Natalya won the match, and Naomi, guest commentator at the ring, wanted to shake hands with Natalya in congratulations. Natalya refused the gesture, however.

In the next episode of SmackDown, Natalya confronted Naomi with the fact that she had made a toy out of the title belt by equipping it with LED lights . Natalya accused Naomi of disrespecting the Hart family, and at SummerSlam the title should regain the honor it deserves. Ms. Money in the Bank Carmella threatened Naomi with redeeming the Money in the Bank contract. Naomi and Lynch defeated Natalya and Carmella the following week after Carmella substituted on and was immediately beaten by Naomi.

In the August 8, 2017 episode of SmackDown, Carmella defeated Naomi in a non-title match through the intervention of her manager James Ellsworths , who had just returned to the ring after his 30-day ban. Later that evening, Natalya warned Carmella and Ellsworth not to intervene in the match against Naomi at Summerslam. Carmella replied to Natalya that she hoped she would win SummerSlam so she could immediately redeem her Money in the Bank contract to win the SmackDown Women's Championship.

Naomi was the guest commentator for the match between Natalya and Lynch next week. After the match, Natalya continued to attack Becky Lynch. She withdrew when Naomi came to help. Then Carmella came out and wished Naomi and Natalya the best of luck at SummerSlam. James Ellsworth added that whoever won the match would lose the SmackDown Women's Championship, pointing to the Money in the Bank suitcase.

Big Cass versus Big Show and Enzo Amore

In the Great Balls of Fire, Big Cass defeated Enzo Amore . The following night on Raw, Big Cass bragged about the win and was attacked by Big Show , who kicked Big Cass out of the ring. When Amore was showing Big Cass with it the next week, Big Cass and then Big Show, who wanted to protect Amore, came into the ring. In a brawl, Big Cass put Big Show down.

Enzo Amore and Big Cass had a rematch the following week that Big Cass won again. After the match, Big Cass continued to attack Amore, and Big Show came to the rescue. Big Cass knocked him down again, however.

On the next Raw episode, Big Cass beat Big Show by disqualification because Amore attacked Big Cass during the match. After Big Cass knocked Amore out with a big boot , Big Show knocked him down with a knockout punch .

Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson won against Amore and Big Show on the August 7, 2017 Raw edition after Big Cass distracted them at the ring. A brawl broke out between Big Cass, Amore and Big Show, which Big Show could end with a knockout punch against Big Cass. Later that evening, Big Cass confronted Raw General Manager Kurt Angle with a request for a match against Big Show at SummerSlam, but Amore should be banned from New York State for the time being. Instead, Angle suggested locking Amore in a shark cage across the ring during the match . When Big Cass agreed, Angle set the match for SummerSlam.

When Big Cass tried to perform Enzo Amore and Big Show on the August 14th episode of Raw and presented the Shark Cage , he was interrupted by the two. Big Cass attacked Amore, whereupon Big Show hit back. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson came to the aid of Big Cass and ended up breaking Big Show's hand in the door of the Shark Cage .

Rusev versus Randy Orton

Randy Orton (April 2015)

In the SmackDown episode from August 1, 2017, Rusev opened an Open Challenge against any wrestler from the SmackDown raster. Randy Orton , who Rusev had never defeated before, accepted the challenge and attacked Rusev with the RKO .

Rusev attacked Randy Orton from behind the following week after beating Jinder Mahal in a non-title match. In the last edition of SmackDown before SummerSlam, after Rusev's match against Chad Gable , Orton attacked Rusev from behind with the RKO .

Alexa Bliss versus Sasha Banks

At Great Balls of Fire, Sasha Banks defeated Alexa Bliss by counting, after which Bliss retained the Raw Women's Championship . The following night on Raw, Banks and Bayley faced Bliss and Nia Jax . Bayley pinned Bliss and won an individual match against her the following week. Later that evening, Bayley and Banks confronted Raw General Manager Kurt Angle about the number one contender for the Raw Women's Championship. Bayley made it clear again that she has won against Bliss twice in a row. Banks declared herself the number one challenger because she would clearly have won the championship at Great Balls of Fire had Bliss not been counted out. Angle then decided that the two of them would face each other on Raw next week, and the winner would face Bliss on SummerSlam. Bayley beat Banks and was declared the number one challenger.

On the next episode of Raw, Bayley defeated Nia Jax by counting, after which Bliss tried unsuccessfully to attack Bayley. Bayley announced the next week that she sustained a shoulder injury in the match against Nia Jax, so she would have to forego the number 1 challenge. As a result, two triple threat matches were scheduled for the next week , the winners of which were to make up the number 1 challenger to the Raw Women's Championship in another match. In the first match, Banks won against Alicia Fox and Emma , in the second Nia Jax won against Dana Brooke and Mickie James . The following week, Sasha Banks defeated Nia Jax to become the number 1 challenger to the Raw Women's Championship against Alexa Bliss at SummerSlam.

Finn Bálor versus Bray Wyatt

On the July 17, 2017 Raw episode, when Finn Bálor went backstage after his match against Elias Samson , Bray Wyatt appeared on the TitanTron . He said that he was enjoying Bálor's pain and that it was his worst nightmare.

Wyatt cost Bálor his victory the following week when he used Sister Abigail against him in his no-disqualification match against Samson . He stepped into the ring on the July 31, 2017 Raw episode, whereupon the lights began to flash red and then went out. When they started again, Bálor appeared in the ring and attacked him.

While Bálor performed Wyatt the following week, the lights in the arena again went out and Wyatt appeared in the center of the ring. Just before the lights went out again, the two of them exchanged blows , and Wyatt appeared on the TitanTron and laughed at Bálor. As a result, a match was set between the two at SummerSlam.

After a confrontation between the two the following week, Raw General Manager Kurt Angle rescheduled the SummerSlam match for the same night that Bray Wyatt beat Finn Bálor. After the match, Wyatt poured a blood-red liquid over Bálor. A rematch was scheduled for SummerSlam, and Bálor promised to let out his Demon King personality in the match .

Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins versus Cesaro and Sheamus

Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose (April 2014)

In July and August 2017, it looked more and more as if Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins would pull themselves back together as part of the former The Shields. But the Shield's well-known recognition punch did not occur. Both of them repeatedly refused the gesture for several weeks, mostly because Ambrose couldn't trust Rollins because of his scams over the past three years.

On the July 31, 2017 Raw episode, Rollins was confronted by Cesaro and Sheamus , but was able to win the match against Sheamus later that evening. After the match, Cesaro and Sheamus attacked Rollins before Ambrose could rush to help. In the backstage area, Ambrose Rollins declared that he would no longer help him.

The following week, after Rollins lost the rematch to Sheamus, he was attacked again, but Ambrose failed to come to the ring to help Rollins. Later that evening, Cesaro was defeated by Ambrose and immediately attacked by Cesaro and Sheamus before Rollins could help him. Ambrose began to trust Rollins slightly again and offered him his fist, but Rollins firmly refused the gesture.

Although Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins got into an argument on the August 14, 2017 Raw episode, they both successfully fought a match against Cesaro and Sheamus. Both ultimately returned the punch and reunited. Raw General Manager Kurt Angle immediately came out and scheduled a match between the two teams for the Raw Tag Team Championship for SummerSlam .

AJ Styles versus Kevin Owens and the role of Shane McMahon

At Battleground, Kevin Owens won his third United States Championship against AJ Styles . In the next SmackDown episode, Styles wanted to ask for a rematch for the title, but was interrupted by Chris Jericho , who had asked him for a rematch since he lost the title last May. A rematch was contractually agreed for both of them, whereupon SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon set a triple-thread match for the United States Championship between the two and Owens that same evening. Styles was able to pin Jericho and won back the title of United States Champion. After this match, Owens had asked for a rematch for the next week. In that match, Owens attacked the referee, but Styles was declared the winner even though both of Owens' shoulders were not on the mat during the pinfall. The frustrated Owens confronted McMahon and SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan with a request for a rematch, but this time with a competent referee. Bryan scheduled the rematch for SummerSlam and declared McMahon the guest referee.

AJ Styles, Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon met in the ring next week, where McMahon stated that he would lead the match fairly. A brawl broke out between Owens and Styles, with Styles accidentally hitting McMahon with a Pele kick . On the following edition of Raw, Styles asked McMahon for forgiveness, but Shane said it wasn't necessary. Styles feared that McMahon would favor Owens in the match at SummerSlam because of this oversight. McMahon denied fears, but if Styles were to lend a hand to McMahon in the match, he would hit back, which is not common practice for referees. Owens then stepped into the ring and expressed his view that Styles would not be disqualified in this case and shook hands with McMahon. However, he rejected the gesture, suggesting Owens and Styles should shake hands. As a result, there was an exchange between the two, and McMahon tried to intervene. He was accidentally hit with a super kick by Owens .

Jinder Mahal versus Shinsuke Nakamura

At Battleground, Jinder Mahal defeated Randy Orton in a Punjabi prison match with the help of the Singh Brothers and The Great Khali and retained the WWE Championship . On the next episode of SmackDown, Mahal called for a new challenger to SummerSlam, after which John Cena stepped into the ring and confronted Mahal. Cena congratulated Mahal on successfully defending the WWE Championship and challenged him to SummerSlam. But SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan told Cena that he had to earn the challenge and set up a match between Cena and Shinsuke Nakamura. The winner of this match should become the number 1 challenger. Nakamura defeated Cena the following week, making him the number one challenger to the WWE Championship.

In the final episode of SmackDown before SummerSlam, Jinder Mahal held India's Independence Day celebrations and his reign as WWE Champion. These were interrupted by Shinsuke Nakamura and he indicated that he would win the championship at SummerSlam.

Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe against each other

Brock Lesnar (March 2015)

On the June 19, 2017 episode of Raw, Roman Reigns declared himself the number one challenger to Universal Champion Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Braun Strowman later returned to the ring and cost Reigns the match against Samoa Joe. He challenged Reigns to an ambulance match at Great Balls of Fire, which he also won. But Reigns hit back, locked Strowman in the ambulance, and backed him into a pillar, injuring Strowman. Meanwhile, Lesnar defeated Samoa Joe and defended the Universal Championship title.

The following night on Raw, Raw General Manager Kurt Angle congratulated Lesnar on winning the Great Balls of Fire. When Angle wanted to publicly announce who Lesnar would defend his title against at SummerSlam, Reigns interrupted the two with a challenge from the champion, but Lesnar indicated that he did not deserve it. Then Samoa Joe came along and said that Lesnar hadn't defeated him at Great Balls of Fire, he had just escaped. Angle then set a match between Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe for the next week, and the winner would get a title match for the Universal Championship against Lesnar at SummerSlam.

During that match, Braun Strowman attacked both opponents, and the match remained undecided. In a subsequent brawl between the three, Strowman struck down his opponents. As a result, Angle was no longer sure about the match at SummerSlam and postponed the decision until the next week.

Before Angle could present his decision on who will challenge Lesnar at SummerSlam on the next episode of Raw, Strowman, Samoa Joe and Reigns stepped into the ring and explained their intentions. Angle then set up a fatal four-way match between Lesnar, Strowman, Reigns and Samoa Joe for the SummerSlam. Again a violent fight broke out between the three, which was ended by the intervention of several wrestlers.

The following week, Lesnar and his agent Paul Heyman requested an explanation from Angle on how to schedule a fatal four-way match at SummerSlam. Heyman publicly announced that Lesnar would be leaving WWE if he lost that match at SummerSlam. Later that night, Reigns defeated Samoa Joe and Strowman in a triple threat match.

Lesnar and Heyman appeared on Miz TV on the next Raw episode . Lesnar finished the issue with a suplex and an F-5 against each of the Miztourage (Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas) and The Miz. Later that night, Strowman defeated Reigns in a Last Man Standing match with the help of Samoa Joe, who used the Coquina Clutch against Reigns. In the last Raw episode before SummerSlam, a violent fight broke out between all four participants, which could only be stopped by the security staff and other wrestlers.

Neville (2017)

Three matches were played in the kick-off show. The first was a 6-man tag team match between the Intercontinental Champion The Miz and The Miztourage against the Hardy Boyz (Jeff and Matt Hardy) and Jason Jordan. The Miz won the match for his team with the Skull Crushing Final against Jordan.

Akira Tozawa then unsuccessfully defended the WWE Cruiserweight Championship against Neville. With the Red Arrow against Tozawa Neville became two-time cruiserweight champion.

In the third match, The New Day, consisting of Big E and Xavier Woods, lost the SmackDown Tag Team Championship to The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso) after the latter played a double Samoan Splash against Big E. This was the second time The Usos won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship.

Pay-per-view show

John Cena opened the pay-per-view show of SummerSlam 2017 in a match against Baron Corbin. When Cena started the Five Nuckle Shuffle , Corbin evaded. After a tornado DDT , Cena was finally able to perform the Five Nuckle Shuffle . Corbin transformed Cena's approach to attitude adjustment into a Deep Six , whereupon he could almost pin Cena. In the end, Cena prevailed with the attitude adjustment and was able to win the match.

In the next match, Naomi unsuccessfully defended the SmackDown Women's Championship against Natalya. Naomi was able to counter Natalya's sharpshooter by smacking her on the lower turnbuckle. At the end of the match, Naomi started a split-legged moonsault , which Natalya countered by pulling in her knees. The subsequent sharpshooter from Natalya forced Naomi to give up. Natalya won her first championship since 2010, becoming the first female wrestler to hold both the WWE Divas Championship and SmackDown Women's Championship titles.

Big Cass faced Big Show in the following match. Enzo Amore was locked in the Shark Cage hanging over the ring . Big Show almost pinned Big Cass after a knockout punch . Even after a chokeslam , Big Cass was just able to lift his shoulder again. Spurred on by the course of the match, Amore undressed down to his underpants, smeared himself with oil and tried to leave the Shark Cage , which he finally succeeded in doing. Big Cass was waiting and immediately gave Amore a big boot . Only after the second Big Boot against Big Show and a subsequent Empire Elbow was Big Cass able to leave the ring as the winner.

In the fourth match, Randy Orton and Rusev faced each other. When Orton was on his way to the ring, he was already attacked by Rusev. After the referee had determined that Orton could start the match, he let the ring bell ring at the start of the match. Orton used the RKO against Rusev at the beginning of the match and won after just ten seconds.

Alexa Bliss unsuccessfully defended the Raw Women's Championship against Sasha Banks in the following match. After a twisted bliss , Banks was almost beaten. However, in the end she was able to make the bank statement . After the first escape, Bliss was put in the bank statement again and gave up. With the title win, Banks became the first four-time Raw Women's Champion.

Finn Bálor (April 2016)

In the next match, The Demon King Finn Bálor and Bray Wyatt faced each other. After a coup De Grace , Bálor won the match.

Cesaro and Sheamus defended the Raw Tag Team Championship unsuccessfully against Dan Ambrose and Seth Rollins in their seventh match. When Sheamus and Cesaro put on a white noise against Ambrose at the end of the match , Rollins showed a super hurricanrana against Cesaro on Sheamus and dealt a super kick against both Cesaro and Sheamus. Ambrose won the Raw Tag Team Championship for his team with the Dirty Deeds against Sheamus. For Ambrose it is the first Tag Team Championship win, since then he has been considered the first member of the then Shield to become Grand Slam Champion .

In the next match, AJ Styles successfully defended the United States Championship against Kevin Owens with Shane McMahon as guest referee. Owens attacked Styles before the official start of the match, which is why McMahon separated the two. During the match, McMahon responded with a body check against an attack by Owens, whereupon Styles used a Springboard 450 Splash against Owens. But this pulled McMahon on himself to protect himself from the attack. Owens used a pop up power bomb against Styles, but the following pinfall came too late. Owens began to argue with McMahon. Owens countered Styles' Calf Crusher and kicked him against McMahon. Styles tried to force Owens to surrender with another Calf Crusher , but McMahon was knocked out and Styles and McMahon argued. Styles had a Styles clash against Owens. He repeated the Pop Up Powerbomb against Styles, but after counting the pinfall, McMahon did not ring the ring bell because he realized afterwards that Styles' leg was in the ring rope. The furious Owens started arguing with McMahon and pushed him. Styles tried to roll Owens up. In the end, Styles hit Owens with a Pele Kick , showed the Phenomenal Forearm and a second Styles Clash , whereupon he was able to defeat Owens and keep the United States title.

Jinder Mahal successfully defended his WWE Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura in the penultimate match. In the end, The Singh Brothers intervened in the match, whereupon Nakamura used a Kinshasa against both of them . Mahal took this chance to show the Khallas against the distracted Nakamura , won the match and kept the WWE Championship.

In the main match Brock Lesnar had to defend his Universal Championship against Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe in a fatal four-way match. Early in the match, Samoa Joe put the Coquina Clutch on Lesnar outside the ring . Reigns carried Lesnar with a spear by the guardrail. Samoa Joe showed a side slam against Reigns on the commentary table. Strowman put Lesnar through that commentary table with a running powerslam, and threw a commentary chair on Reigns and Samoa Joe. With a second running powerslam , he promoted Lesnar through the second commentary table and threw the third commentary table on Lesnar. Medical staff had to take care of Lesnar and bring him backstage. When Samoa Joe used the Coquina Clutch against Reigns, the action was interrupted by Strowman. He double chokeslam against Reigns and Samoa Joe and tried to pin both down. Lesnar returned to the ring and used the Kimura Lock on Strowman, whereupon Reign's Superman punches against Lesnar, Strowman and Samoa Joe. He again showed a spear against Lesnar. When Samoa Joe tried to use the Coquina Clutch against Reigns, Strowman showed a running front dropkick against Reigns and Samoa Joe. Strowman put in a running powerslam against Samoa Joe. When he also showed a power slam against Reigns, Lesnar interrupted the pinfall at 2. Reigns hit Strowman with a spear , which threw him to the ground. In a similar scene on Great Balls of Fire, Samoa Joe used the Coquina Clutch on Lesnar to counter his F-5 while Reigns' pinfall only went to 2. At the end of the match, Reigns dealt three Superman Puches against Lesnar and tried a Spear again , which Lesnar was able to turn into an F-5 . Brock Lesnar won the match and kept the Universal Championship.

After the event

Raw

John Cena (May 2016)

In the post-SummerSlam Raw episode, Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman stepped into the ring celebrating a successful defense of the Universal Championship. Braun Strowman didn't let that go and attacked Lesnar with two running power slams . Later that evening, a Universal Championship match between Lesnar and Strowman at No Mercy was scheduled.

Big Cass faced Enzo Amore in a Brooklyn street fight . Amore won the match because Big Cass sustained a leg injury and could no longer participate in the fight. Amore then moved to the Cruiserweight League 205 Live.

Also in the Raw episode, Jason Jordan challenged Finn Bálor. Raw General Manager Kurt Angle scheduled the match that Finn Bálor could win.

SmackDown

AJ Styes (April 2016)

In retaliation for the Singh Brothers' interference in the WWE Championship title match between Shinsuke Nakamura and Jinder Mahal, SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan set a handicap match between Nakamura and The Singh Brothers that Nakamura could win. Then Mahal attacked Nakamura, who was able to successfully defend himself with a Kinshasa. In the following week Randy Orton and Nakamura competed in a team against Mahal and Rusev and won.

AJ Styles announced an Open Challenge for the United States Championship, which Kevin Owens immediately accepted. Styles turned down the challenge because he had already beaten Owens at SummerSlam. Kevins felt that guest referee Shane McMahon would have given AJ Styles preferential treatment. As a result, SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon came into the ring to defend himself against these allegations. After a verbal confrontation, Styles accepted the challenge for a rematch and McMahon allowed Owens to choose a guest referee himself, but it was his last chance for the title. Owens chose Baron Corbin as guest referee, but in the middle of the match, McMahon took control of the match due to Corbin's poor performance. In the end, Styles successfully defended his title.

After the new SmackDown Tag Team Champions beat The Usos The Hype Bros ( Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder ). They then issued a warning to all SmackDown Tag Teams. After their match against The New Day the following week, the winner was allowed to choose the type of rematch for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. The new SmackDown Women's Champion, Natalya, indicated that she wanted to restore the dignity of the title. In a team with Carmella, she lost to Naomi and Becky Lynch. The following week, Naomi challenged Natalya to a rematch for the SmackDown Women's Championship on the September 5th episode.
