Radical 166 , which means “ mile , village ”, is one of twenty traditional radicals in Chinese writing , which consist of seven strokes.

With 5 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , it has a very low frequency.

The symbol for village is also used as a measure of length and corresponds to half a kilometer. Since the font reform of 1958, the sign has also meant “inside”.

In the compound symbol, 里 occurs primarily as a sound carrier, as in 厘 (= strict), 狸 (= marten), 理 (= reason), 娌 (= 妯娌 sister-in-law), 俚 (= vulgar). The lower part of 童 (= child) is not a 里, but the rest of 重, which acts here as a sound carrier. 量 (= measure) originally consisted of 重 and a combination of 日 (= sun) and 乡 (= land), which served as a sound carrier.
