Radical 168 , meaning "long", is one of nine traditional radicals in the Chinese script with eight strokes.

It is extremely rare with a single combination of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary . In the Kangxi dictionary, however, 55 characters were still to be found under this radical.

The modern abbreviation 长 in the People's Republic of China reduces the exit sign to its essential elements and allows its exit to be recognized. In an older spelling variant 镸, only the "foot" of the character is changed; the character connections are only created with this variant.

In the pictogram, the hair is so long that it has to be tied. Later a hairpin is stuck into the character. This is supposed to represent an adult. The hair is a sign of aging. The oracle sign shows a figure with wild hair who is apparently walking on a stick. As a single sign, it means growing, being older.

Today the sign mostly functions as a sound carrier like in 怅 (= to be disappointed), 伥 (= to perform henchman services), 张 (= open, to tighten), 帐 (= tent, canopy) or 胀 (= to expand).
