Radical 189 , meaning "high", is one of eight traditional radicals in Chinese script , which consist of ten strokes. The variant 髙 is also written with ten lines.
It is extremely rare with two combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary . In the Kangxi dictionary there were still 34 characters under this radical.
The seal script of this radical shows a building with several floors and a pointed roof. In the compound symbol 高 can appear as a bearer of meaning, for example in:
- 亭 (= pavilion, where the upper part is a reduced character 高)
Far more often, however, 高 functions as a sound carrier in the compound symbol:
- 篙 (= rod),
- 膏 (= fat),
- 稿 (= straw),
- 槁 (= withered),
- 搞 (= do, do) and
- 毫 (= fine hair).
