Le Mans 24 hour race 1934
The twelfth 24-hour race of Le Mans , the 12 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also 24 Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , took place from June 16 to 17, 1934 on the Circuit des 24 Heures .
The race
In order to meet the high quality of the race from a logistical point of view, completely new pit facilities were built in the spring of 1934. The system created space for a maximum of 60 vehicles, with two garages available for each vehicle. The French mineral oil industry financed a new, state-of-the-art tank system.
The dramatic victory of Tazio Nuvolari last year had sparked such great international interest that the starting field increased to 44 participants. Works teams from Aston Martin , Riley and Singer came from Great Britain, but they all started in the small classes and thus had no chance of overall victory. 17 vehicles came from France, including five Bugattis and an old Lorraine-Dietrich B3-6. The Tracta team took part in the 24-hour race for the last time. The favorites were again the Alfa Romeo 8C , all of which were used by private teams this year.
At the start, Raymond Sommer took the lead, who dominated the race in the first hour ahead of the three other Alfas. But summer was canceled after almost two hours due to an engine fire. The two British Alfas were eliminated by Sunday morning, so that the Chinetti / Étancelin car was clearly in the lead. All five Bugattis had long since retired. Chinetti's lead over two Rileys was so great that the Italian spent the last two hours on a rather leisurely ride. The slow driving style nevertheless led to a sure win and compensated the Italian for the narrow defeat from the previous year. The distance record could not be broken this way.
