Season course

Scoring

Again there was a division of the season into two periods with regard to the points for the overall World Cup. For the men, the first period ran until January 24th (giant slalom Adelboden ), for the women until January 26th (competitions in Crans-Montana ). In the Discipline World Cup, the best five results counted; the combinations counted as part of the “period ratings” for the overall World Cup, but there was no separate “small crystal ball”.

World Cup decisions

The discipline ranking in the men's giant slalom was decided in the last race in the Sierra Nevada , whereby a close race produced Ingemar Stenmark as the race winner, who thus came to 115 points, but with second place Heini Hemmi also achieved this number of points, which made him win the small crystal ball helped; The decisive factor was the higher number of cancellation points (15 to 9).

Nations Cup: The
consolation for the ÖSV was that the Nations Cup for women and men was won, and it was more superior than anyone dared to hope for. This Nations Cup only included the parallel slaloms for women and men on the slopes of Sol y Neve ( Sierra Nevada ). In the women’s category ,
Christa Zechmeister won on March 26th (it was the only win of the season for the DSV ); the other ranks: Nadig, Moser-Pröll, Eberle, Morerod, Kaserer, Bernadette Zurbriggen, Habersatter, Spieß, Kreiner, on March 27th Manfred Brunner won ahead of Heidegger, Nöckler, Stock, W Frommelt, Mahre, Neureuther, H. Hemmi, Tresch.

Program changes, rescheduling

Heavy snowfall since December 6th not only prevented further training in Val-d'Isère, but also impeded and prevented the runs. The women's downhill race on December 8th (when Elfi Deufl led Brigitte Habersatter ) had to be canceled (this was the first race to be canceled in the eleven-year history of the World Cup) and the men canceled; Although the women's run was initially planned for December 10th (between the two rounds of the men's giant slalom, which was also scheduled for that day), both runs were ultimately driven elsewhere; the ladies caught up with them on December 20th in Zell am See ; the men's downhill, initially programmed for December 11th (and replaced here by a second giant slalom - initially there was also a suggestion from the Italian team captain Mario Cotelli to organize a sprint downhill run in two runs), on December 17th in Val Gardena (since December 12th) A second giant slalom had been run in Val-d'Isère on December 2nd, the one planned for December 18th in Val Gardena was not applicable, ie it was practically the exchange with the downhill.)

The Kandahar descent planned for February 5th in St. Anton am Arlberg had to be relocated to Laax in the end, so this World Cup station came again after the slalom on January 3rd; first there was an emergency program (postponements to February 6th, 7th and even 8th were planned), but on February 7th the final cancellation came. The combination was only decided in Laax after the slalom had been driven on February 6th in St. Anton. Immediately after the decision in favor of Laax there was even the consideration that one of the departures planned in the USA should be held there as a precaution.

With regard to the USA downhill races, the ÖSV named Bad Kleinkirchheim (men) and Bad Gastein (women) as possible replacement locations. In mid-February, the slopes in Sun Valley and Heavenly Valley, where the USA races were planned, were free of snow. From an Austrian point of view, this also raised the question of whether Franz Klammer should start the journey to the USA if there were no departures there. Heavenly only gave the “green light” on February 28 because it had snowed enough. Only in the upper part of the route was there a lack of snow after us, so that the men's descent had to be shortened by 700 meters and the route was now the same length as that of the women. The ÖSV initially protested at the FIS because of this shorter route ("there would not be the height difference of 750 m required by the FIS regulations, and 25 to 50 m in length were missing, so Franz Klammer was disadvantaged"), but he pulled the same on back next day. Financial aspects were also decisive. The discussions did not end entirely because there were safety concerns (there would be too little snow next to the route and there would be trees and rocks). In addition, there was no precise information about the difference in altitude (625 to 645 m) and the length of the route, at which the number 2100 m "leveled off". That was not enough of the problem, the timing of the time runs on March 11th also failed.

Ultimately, there was also an empty report for the second women's run in Heavenly on March 13th, because it had to be due to strong wind storms at start no. 35 and was not scored (and there was no substitute for it). At the time of the cancellation, the two Swiss Nadig and De Agostini were ahead of Martina Ellmer , while Habersatter was 10 seconds behind and Moser-Pröll had given up at all.

Premier victories

In chronological order they were Phil Mahre (giant slalom on December 10th in Val-d'Isère ), Klaus Heidegger (giant slalom on January 9th in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ); It was strange that he was only officially accepted from the B- to the A-squad before the Austrian ski champion, who started on February 9th (in addition, he even had the chance to win the discipline in the giant slalom and overall World Cup victory at short notice), Josef Walcher (Departure on January 31st in Morzine ), Sepp Ferstl (combination Laax / St. Anton am Arlberg on February 6th / 18th - thus also the first combination victory for Germany's men) and Bartl Gensbichler (departure on March 13th in Heavenly Valley) and Perrine Pelen (Slalom Crans Montana on January 26th; she had already proven her talent in the first slalom of the season when she finished 8th with No. 55) and Regina Sackl (Slalom Furano on February 26th).

Resignations

Ernst Good , Thomas Hauser , Engelhard Pargätzi , Walter Tresch and Ingrid Gfölner .

Worth mentioning

  • In the women’s race, Annemarie Moser-Pröll (after a one-year race break for private reasons) was back, while another top runner, last year's overall World Cup winner Rosi Mittermaier , had ended her career.
With regard to Moser-Pröll, there were still a few hurdles for the time being. And there were even reports that she was going to be a professional. Your return was an important topic at the general meeting of the ÖSV on November 6th. Her amateur status had also required FIS approval (also because of the recordings of commercials she had made during her break from racing, whereby she had paid back the fees collected), which was granted by the
FIS at a conference in Tbilisi . However, it fitted in practically seamlessly with the team; Concerns that she would have to undergo fitness or other tests were immediately gone. She had taken part in men's training on the Planai , and on December 6th, she set two fastest times for the Val d'Isère descent planned for December 8th
  • Before the season started, Erwin Stricker asked for a “veto right” for the racing drivers, according to which there should be no start in bad weather
  • It was also known that Olympic champion Heini Hemmi has a so-called "B license", according to which further participation in the Olympic Games is excluded for him
  • Gustav Thöni achieved his 24th (and last) World Cup victory with the combination success in Kitzbühel (January 16), with which he still had the most World Cup victories, in second place were Franz Klammer and Ingemar Stenmark with 21 wins. Both had caught up a lot: the Swede with 11 wins had overtaken Karl Schranz and Piero Gros (12 each), Jean-Noël Augert (15) and Jean-Claude Killy (18), Klammer had also shone with six downhill wins.

Other happenings

  • The women's downhill run in Cortina d'Ampezzo on December 15th had to be shortened due to lack of snow in the lower part of the route and the first slalom run on December 16th began at 9 o'clock due to a requirement by Eurovision .
  • In view of the difficulty of the slope in Val Gardena, 18 runners withdrew their entries for the descent on December 17th after the visit.
  • After a long absence, Ken Read was only there again when he left Laax. He even achieved the best time in the first training session on February 16, while Franz Klammer was puzzled after finishing 32nd in the final training session. His race win, which he clinched in the final section (he was third in the meantime), was not entirely expected. - The radio transmission on the Austrian station Ö 3 could only be handled via telephone line.
  • Franz Klammer had a shocking family experience on February 20, because his younger brother Klaus had a bad fall during an FIS downhill race in Lienz . The result was paralysis that confined him to a wheelchair.
  • The European associations only sent a small group of high-potential runners to the technology competitions for women and men in Furano from February 25th to 27th, a total of 51 men and 40 women (the ÖSV was represented by 5 men and 6 women) .
  • The men's giant slalom in Sun Valley went extremely badly for the ÖSV: Manfred Brunner was fifteenth and was the best of only 3 drivers who had entered the classification.
  • The races in Åre could be saved by constantly bringing in snow.
  • The final giant slalom in the Sierra Nevada (on the “Sol y Neve” slope, in English “sun and snow”) on March 24th, Monika Kaserer had to ski on her brand colleague Hansi Hinterseer's skis because her own had not arrived.

Remarks

  • A draw in downhill runs in groups of ten (instead of 15) seemed to have been planned, but not carried out (slalom and giant slalom were not included). For 1977/78 there should be only 22 men's races (which, also happened)
  • The sports director of the Italian federation, known for reforms, Mario Cotelli, suggested in an interview for the sports newspaper “Gazzetta dello Sport” a change in the sequence of the series of competitions with a split, but with the first part to be held until the end of January, afterwards should there be a “championship of specialists” in which the top 15 of each discipline would have to contest a series of 3 slaloms, giant slaloms and downhill runs
  • On February 15th, the FIS published the new world rankings, which, however, had not yet included the previous national championships. For Moser-Pröll, this meant that her slalom title was not taken into account in the Austrian championships and she was only classified in 20th place (in the giant slalom she was fifth).
  • In the men's slalom, Stenmark and Gros ex aequo were ahead of Radici (on the next ranks Heidegger, Hinterseer and Neureuther), in the giant slalom there was even a trio with Heini Hemmi, Stenmark and Thöni at the top (rank 8 Heidegger), who led in the downhill Brackets in front of Russi and Plank.
  • In the women's slalom double lead Morerod and Pelen before Debernard ( Monika Kaserer in 10th place), in the giant slalom also a duo with Morerod & Kaserer before Debernard, in the downhill it was a trio with Zurbriggen, Habersatter and Moser before Evi Mittermaier.
  • The Austrian runners dominated the downhill (out of a total of 18 races for women and men, 16 went to the ÖSV, the remaining two to Switzerland)
  • In the women’s category, four nations shared the 27 victories (Austria 12, Switzerland 10, France 4, Liechtenstein 1)
  • After Willi Frommelt had already won bronze for Liechtenstein at the 1974 World Cup downhill and in the 1976 Olympic Slalom, he and his brother Paul Frommelt achieved the first podium finishes in the World Cup for the Lords of the Principality
  • Claudia Giordani won on February 1, 1977 in Maribor the generally first slalom victory for the Italian women, after she had succeeded in the giant slalom on January 9, 1974 in Les Gets ; the Italians now appeared in all three basic disciplines with one World Cup success each
  • The Italian men had fallen behind after the successes of the last few years (victories in the overall World Cup and in discipline rankings, and also Nations Cup). As early as February, racing director Mario Cotelli had to admit the failure and he announced changes (among other things, Gustav Thöni should no longer ski downhill because this reduced his performance in slalom and giant slalom).

Race outside the World Cup

The season began with a series of races as part of the so-called "World Series", u. between for men on 28./29. November in Livigno with a slalom and giant slalom, each with victories from Ingemar Stenmark . Then the women drove a slalom on November 30th and the men on December 1st each in Aprica , with Lise-Marie Morerod and Stenmark winning again. It went on to Bormio, where on 2/3 December there were giant slaloms. Claudia Giordani and Stenmark won for the fourth time. The conclusion was formed by parallel slaloms in St. Moritz (December 4th / 5th), with another Morerod victory (by the way, the starting box in this women's competition went up in flames before the start of the race), while Walter Tresch was able to defeat Stenmark. TV broadcasts were planned for all of these competitions, but those from Bormio were omitted because no cameras could be installed. It should be noted that these races were not part of the Nations Cup (see Nations Cup scores :).

  • Due to an idea of the US team leadership, there was an "international match" between the Austrian and US runners in Oberstaufen on January 2nd in the form of a parallel slalom, which Monika Kaserer won in front of three other Austrians. As a bonus for the audience, Rosi Mittermaier also competed “parallel” against Heidi Biebl .
  • In the week after the men's slalom in St. Anton am Arlberg, the national associations held their championships, the Austrians from February 9th in Bad Kleinkirchheim
  • In Sun Valley there was also a combined classification in which Stenmark won ahead of Phil Mahre and Nöckler and Morerod won ahead of Fisher and Pelen (please see footnote)
