Andrew Williams (born August 27, 1828 in Ormstown , Canada , † October 6, 1907 in Plattsburgh , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Andrew Williams enjoyed a modest schooling. Then he went about commercial business. He immigrated to the United States in 1852 and settled in Plattsburgh, Clinton County . Between 1863 and 1865 he was involved in the manufacture of nails. After that he pursued the mining of iron ore, was active in the timber trade and in the manufacture of horseshoe nails and wagons. In 1881 he was one of the founders of the Iron National Bank in Plattsburgh, where he served as its president until 1888. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the 1874 congressional election for the 44th Congress , Williams was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 18th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded William A. Wheeler on March 4, 1875 . He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1878 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1879 Congress of.

He spent two years in the Board of Supervisors of Dannemora and represented Plattsburgh a number of years in a similar position. Between 1889 and 1902 he was superintendent of the Plattsburgh waterworks. He was elected county treasurer in 1890 . He was re-elected in 1893, 1896, 1899, 1902 and 1905. He was also a member of the education committee. He died on October 6, 1907 in Plattsburgh and was then buried in Riverside Cemetery .
